Allen's Game-Winner Lifts Spartans Past Greyhounds

YORK, PA- Freshman Rachel Allen (York, Pa/ Christian School of York) scored just 6:10 into the first overtime to lead the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over Moravian College, Saturday at York’s Graham Field. The win moves the Spartans to 5-4-1 on the year while the Greyhounds fall to 7-5.

Allen had a ball played to her by senior Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa/ Kennard-Dale) just to the top of of the box. The freshman then took a dribble and crisply laid the ball into the far post for the green and white’s first overtime victory of the season, and snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Spartans came out strong in the first half putting together great possession and challenging Greyhound goalkeeper Caitlin Corrigan with several shots on frame. In the game’s 16th minute, junior Lauren Stewart (West River, Md/Southern) was taken down just inside the box to give the Spartans a penalty kick. Senior Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md/ Academy of the Holy Cross) placed the ball just to the right of Corrigan who got a touch to the penalty but was unable to keep the ball out of the net.

The Greyhounds were able to tie the game just a mere two minutes later on a free kick just beyond the right side of the York penalty box. The ensuing set piece lofted toward the Spartan’s back post, rebounded off a York player and bounced into the goal.

The Spartans were relentless in the first half firing off eight shots compared to the greyhounds one shot, yet the score line remained 1-1.

As the game wore on in the second half both teams frantically pushed for the go ahead goal creating several great opportunities. The Spartans best chance came with just six minutes left as freshman Stephanie Rice (Glen Rock, Pa/Susquehannock) had a breakaway opportunity inside the Greyhound 18-yard box. Unfortunately for Rice and the Spartans, Corrigan successfully cut down Rice’s angle and forced shot wide.

Rice’s attempt would be the most dangerous chance for either side until Allen’s game-winner in overtime.

For the match, York held a 19-5 advantage in shots, with a 4-1 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) had two saves while picking up her fifth win of the season. Corrigan posted nine stops for the Greyhounds cutting off numerous Spartan opportunities.

The Spartans hit the road for their next matchup, facing former Capital Athletic Conference opponent Catholic University. Game time is set for 4:30 in Washington, DC.
