YORK, PA-The York College women’s soccer squad fashioned a solid effort as they shutout Gwynedd-Mercy College 2-0 in a non-conference contest in York, PA on Saturday. The Spartans improve to 3-1-1 overall while the Griffins fall to 1-4.
The Spartans wasted little time in putting the Griffins on the defensive as they carried the play, pressuring Griffin goalie Kristie Pollock early and often. The Spartans first outstanding scoring chance came in the 23rd minute as Allie Jensen (Parkville, Md./Parkville) hit a bullet from the top of the box that grazed the post and slid to the outside. The Spartans got a great header from senior captain Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) off a corner kick. That header seemed ticketed for just inside the right post but the ball took a hop and bounced harmlessly wide of the goal.
The Spartans finally got on the board on a nice set piece as senior captain Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) took a free kick from about 35 yards out. Allen’s kick was collected on the far post and crossed into the goal by sophomore Carly Bock (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville). Bock’s goal was her first of the year and came in the 32nd minute.
York dominated the first half statistics as they held a 10-1 edge in shots and a 4-0 margin in corner kicks.
The second half saw the Spartans continue to pressure the Griffins defense. That pressure paid off for a second Spartan goal in the 59th minute as Ally Wivell (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) took a free kick after a Griffin foul. Wivell’s perfectly placed kick found a front running Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) who popped the ball past Pollack for her team-leading third goal of the year.
The Spartans thought they had a third goal in the 73rd minute as Erin Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) appeared to flick the ball past reserve goaltender Abby Reed but Mummert was called off sides and the goal was disallowed.
Spartan sophomore goalie Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) earned the clean sheet but she was not forced to make a save courtesy of the outstanding work of the Spartans’ defensive unit. Macgregor, Allen, junior captain Jackie Moser (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), and Wivell were outstanding all day long as they limited the Griffins to just three shots with none of those attempts coming on goal. The Spartan defense also held the Griffins without a corner kick in 90 minutes of action.
The Spartans finished the game holding an 18-3 edge in shots and a 8-0 bulge in corner kicks.
Pollock finished with six saves for the Griffins while Reed was not forced to make a save over the final 20 minutes of the game.
The green and white returns to action on Tuesday evening as they travel to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference tilt. Game time in Elizabethtown is set for 7:00 pm.
