Spartan Offense Erupts; York Downs Gallaudet 16-0
WASHINGTON, DC – The York College women’s soccer team put together an offensive barrage Tuesday evening with a 16-0 win over Gallaudet under the lights at the Bison’s Hotchkiss Field. The Capital Athletic Conference victory boosts the Spartans’ record to 8-4-1 including 4-1 in league play, while the hosts fall to 0-13 and 0-5 in the CAC.
The green and white took control early in the match as sophomore Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tallied two goals just over 90 seconds into the match. The Spartans would add two more, one from Lauren Stewart (West River, Md./Southern) and the other from Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) before the six-minute mark, putting the game out of reach early. Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) would add York’s fifth of the day in the 18th-minute, as she would end up scoring twice and distributing a trio of assists during the match. The Spartans would go on to add four more scores in the half, including Erin Mummert’s (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) first two scores of her sophomore campaign, to push the lead to 9-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
The second half was nearly a carbon copy of the first as the Spartans notched seven more goals. Katherine Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) initiated York’s second half scoring with a header goal in the 52nd minute off a Sam Shultz (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) corner kick. Torode’s notch was her first of the season and first as a Spartan.
Goals from Stanley and Mergler increased the Spartan advantage to 12-0 with 30 minutes to play.
Freshman Rachel Allen (York, Pa./Christian School of York) then tallied her second of the game and fourth of the year in the match’s 63rd minute with a score off a Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) assist.
Stephanie Rice (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) would be the seventh Spartan to tally in the match, as she hit a right-footed bender that tucked neatly into the right side of the Bison goal. Rice’s score, which came in the game’s 76th-minute, was the first of her collegiate career.
Harney and freshman Lacey Phillips (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake Senior) would finish off the scoring for the York side to move the final score line to 16-0.
For the match, the Spartans spread out their scoring as ten different players tallied for the green and white. York registered a huge 70-1 advantage in shots as much of the match was played inside the Bison’s 18-yard box. The Spartans also held a 15-0 bulge in corners.
Goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) takes the win in the Spartan net as she recorded the Spartans’ only save in her 18:42 of work. Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) finished off the remaining 70 minutes to complete the clean sheet. Gallaudet’s Casey McCullough performed admirably in the Bison net as she registered 24 saves including several outstanding stops.
The Spartans must make a quick turnaround as they travel to nearby Gettysburg. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
