YORK, PA – The York College women’s soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 result to visiting Dickinson College Tuesday evening at York’s Graham Field. With the defeat, the Spartans drop to 2-1-1 on the young season, while the Red Devils improve to 2-0-2.
In the game’s 12th minute, Dickinson looked to take an early lead after a corner kick led to a fray in front of the net. Red Devil forward Rachel Henry was able to knock a shot that seemed destined for the back of the Spartan net. Fortunately for the home squad, Henry’s attempt was cleared off the line by senior defender Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) leaving the match at 0-0.
The only score of the contest came from the foot of Dickinson senior Sarah Casey in the game’s 53rd minute. The forward collected the ball 40 yards from the Spartan goal and was able to get behind York’s defense, giving herself a breakaway. Casey won the foot race and slotted home her second goal of the season just inside the right post.
The Spartan’s best chance of the match would come in the 84th minute as York pressed for the tying goal. Senior defender Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) snapped a header just inside the penalty spot that was targeted for the right side of the goal. Red Devil goalkeeper Kailyn Hartmann made a quick dive to her left to make the save and secure the shutout.
For the match, shots were even at seven apiece. The squads also tied in corners with each side recording seven, but the Spartans did have a 6-2 advantage in corners for the second half.
Hartmann picks up her second win of the year as she made three saves. Spartan goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) takes the loss while amassing three stops.
The Spartans will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday, September 13 against Gwynedd-Mercy. Action from York’s Graham Field begins at 12:30 pm.
