Three Spartans Selected to All-CAC First-Team
YORK, PA - The York College women’s
soccer team placed a trio of student-athletes on the All-Capital
Athletic Conference squad. Senior defender Kali Macgregor
(Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), senior forward
Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale), and
junior midfielder Lauren Stewart (West River,
Md./Southern) were each first-team choices following their
stellar performances in 2008.
Macgregor, who was also a first-team
selection last season and a second-teamer as a sophomore, leaves
the York program as arguably the best defender to ever don the
green and white. Combining strength and toughness, she blossomed
into a regional force over the past two seasons. Macgregor’s
intense passion and hard-nosed determination led a tough Spartan
defense that only allowed 0.80 goals per game this season, helping
the York side to an 11-7-2 mark and an appearance in the CAC
championship match. Dominant in the air, Macgregor’s ability
to win defensive headers helped the Spartans to win and maintain
possession while she was also a force on offensive corner kicks and
set pieces. The co-captain tallied three goals during her senior
campaign, including a thrilling game-winner against Mary Washington
in the first-round of the CAC tournament. Additionally, Macgregor
was a third-team regional NSCAA All-American last season.
“Kali has been an incredible asset
for us throughout her time at York,” Spartan head
women’s soccer coach Vicki Sterner said. “She is tough,
physical, and smart – all the things you look for in a
defensive player. Not only is she talented, but Kali is also a
great leader both on and off the field. We’ll definitely miss
her.”
Stanley, the Spartans’ top goal-scorer
this season posted 12 tallies and four assists for a team-leading
28 points. Her 12 scores this year ties her for the fourth-best
single-season mark in program history. Despite being the focal
point of many opposing defenses in 2008, Stanley became
York’s catalyst on the offensive end as her deft technical
ability and field vision provided numerous dangerous chances for
the green and white. She leaves York having amassed 30 goals and 23
assists, the fourth highest career total in Spartan history, for 83
points, again the fourth-highest career mark in the program’s
13-year history. Aside from this season accolade, Stanley was
selected a second-team forward following her junior season in
2007.
“Jill is a dynamic forward who did great
things for us not only this year but during her whole
career,” Sterner said. “She scored big goals and set up
several others. She became one of the most dangerous players
in the conference, a player other teams needed to take account of
at all times.”
Stewart lands on the All-CAC squad for the
first-time in her career, as she had been one of the more
underappreciated players in the conference. A tough, ball-winning
defensive midfielder, Stewart’s simple, unyielding play
formed the front-line of York’s vaunted defensive unit. An
unassuming yet very talented player, the junior’s impressive
work-rate allows her to consistently be in position to make plays
in the Spartan midfield.
“It’s just nice to see Lauren get
recognized for her outstanding play,” Sterner said.
“She is the type of kid that doesn’t always stand out
to the casual observer, but her play over the last two years has
been instrumental in our success.”
With the loss in the CAC final, Stewart and the
Spartans now turn their attention to next season as they strive to
return to the CAC championship and ultimately the NCAA
tournament.
