YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that women’s soccer player Emily Sullivan has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for August 27 through September 2, 2007.
Sullivan, a senior midfielder from Bowie, MD and Archbishop Spalding, led the 25th ranked Spartans to a pair of wins in the season-opening Bridgewater College Tournament in Bridgewater, VA. The Spartans opened the campaign with a 6-0 win over Widener and then followed that with a 5-1 victory over McDaniel on Sunday.
Sullivan began her senior year with a bang as she notched two goals and handed out three assists during the weekend. She notched York’s first goal of the year, nailing the back of the net just 7:30 into the game against Widener. Sullivan then assisted freshman Erin Mummert for the Spartans’ sixth goal of the day in the 69th minute. In the victory over McDaniel, Sullivan assisted fellow senior Erin Kuhn for the game’s first goal in the sixth minute. She then assisted freshman Brittany Nechay on her first career goal in the 65th minute before scoring her second goal of the year in the 88th minute.
Spartan head coach Vicki Sterner is thrilled with the performance of her senior standout.
“Emily really helped get us off to a good start,” says Sterner. “She does a great job of making plays in the midfield for us. Emily is constantly in the right place at the right time to create scoring chances for her teammates and herself. She is certainly deserving of this honor.”
After two games, Sullivan leads the Spartans with seven points on two goals and three assists. She earned the game-winning goal in the victory over Widener.
For her career, Sullivan is second in all-time goals with 37 while her 104 points are also second in school history.
Sullivan is the daughter of Bruce and Donna Sullivan and is a mathematics major.
