Spartans Victorious on Senior Day
YORK, PA – The York College women’s soccer team defeated visiting Villa Julie College 2-0 in Capital Athletic Tournament action Sunday afternoon. On a brisk and blustery October day, the Spartans improved to 11-5-3 and advance to the CAC semifinals. With the loss, the Mustangs finish their season with a mark of 8-11.
On a day when Spartan seniors Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township), Ashley Gross (York, Pa./Eastern York), Katie Kegerreis (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley), Jenna Knaper (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), and Emily Wolf (Crofton, Md./Arundel) were honored for their immense contributions to the York program, it was Kuhn who paced her team.
Recording the game-winning goal in the 21st minute, Kuhn tallied her eighth goal of the season. Freshman Stephanie Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) delivered a brilliant cross from the left corner of the pitch to the near post. Kuhn put herself in perfect position for the strike as the forward put her squad up 1-0.
York dominated the opening period, recording eleven shots. Unable to break through for their second tally, the Spartans took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second stanza proved much like the first as the green and white continued to control play. In the 56th minute, Kuhn was awarded a penalty-kick after being fouled in the box by Mustang goalkeeper Casey Brown. After a collision between the two left both players on the ground, Brown pinned Kuhn to the turf not allowing her to go after the loose ball. Although Brown saved Kuhn’s penalty-kick, the senior alertly drove home the rebound. Having scored her team-leading ninth goal of the campaign, the forward gave York a two-goal margin.
The Spartans continued to pepper the Mustang net throughout the remaining 30 minutes. Never allowing Villa Julia to mount any serious threat in the second half, York did not allow a shot in the latter 45 minutes.
For the match, the Spartans registered 29 shots including 14 on goal. York held Villa Julie to a mere four shots over 90 minutes. The green and white also led in corners 11-2.
Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) picks up the win the Spartan net recording one save. Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y., Southampton) played the final 11:02 and did not face a shot. Brown notched an incredible eleven saves in the match to keep her squad in contention.
The 2-0 victory allows the Spartans move on to Wednesday’s
