YORK, PA- Taking their first loss of the year,
the York College women’s soccer team fell 3-1 to visiting
Virginia Wesleyan College. The defeat drops the Spartan
record to 4-1 (2-0 CAC) while the eighth-ranked Marlins improve to
Midway through the first stanza, the Virginia Wesleyan entered the scorebook on a goal from Missy Kuhns. Jackie Ochs-Gregory blasted a shot that was blocked by a courageous Spartan defender but unfortunately bounded in front of the Spartan net. The awaiting Kuhns quickly put her foot to the loose ball, giving her squad the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans battled back and in the 41st minute of action. Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa. / Council Rock) lined up a free kick just outside Virginia Wesleyan’s penalty box. The junior defender launched a beautiful strike that scaled the Marlin wall, flew just over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Lindsey Williams and into the top left side of the net. Allen’s set piece tally tied the score at one apiece heading into the halftime break.
Virginia Wesleyan took the lead back in the 56th minute of play. Kuhns hit a well-struck corner that found the head of Kelly Higgins who buried her attempt on the Spartan goal. Now up 2-1, Marlins never relinquished the lead again.
In the 73rd minute, Bonnie Braziel and Sam Tyner connected to extend the Marlin advantage to 3-1. Tyner sent her free kick from the right side through the Spartan penalty area to the far post where Braziel headed in the score. Try as they might, the Spartans were never able to mount a significant scoring attempt throughout the rest of the match.
Virginia Wesleyan led in shots at 13-8, while also taking an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
For the green and white, Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md. / Arundel) went the distance in goal collecting four saves over the 90 minutes of play. Marlin netminder Williams denied three Spartan attempts en route to the victory.
The Spartans take to the road for their next contest, traveling to Dickinson College on Wednesday. The non-conference match is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
