YORK, PA-The York College women’s soccer team snapped their two match losing streak with an impressive 3-0 shutout of Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary’s College on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the CAC while the Seahawks fall to 4-8-1 and 2-2-1 in the conference.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the game’s 17th minute as senior Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) fed freshman Stephanie Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) with a pass inside the box. Mergler drilled the ball top shelf for her second goal of the year.
The remainder of the half would be scoreless as York took the 1-0 lead to the break. York outshot the visitors 8-0 in the opening half as they put together a very productive half.
The second half scoring opened when St. Mary’s gave the Spartans an own goal as the York lead grew to 2-0 just over seven minutes into the half. The Spartans continued to play well and then added a third goal in the 76th minute when senior Ashley Gross (York, Pa./Eastern York) tallied her first goal of the year off a feed from freshman Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
The Spartans finished the game with a 16-1 bulge in total shots including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) earned the shutout in goal for the Spartans. She recorded one save in the win. Marie Oben, who defeated the Spartans in last year’s CAC semifinal tournament game, suffered the loss as she allowed three goals while she recorded three saves.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Gettysburg College in a non-conference tilt. Game time at Graham Field is set for 4:00 pm.
