Spartans Spook Eagles, Advance to CAC Championship Match

YORK, PA – The York College women’s soccer team earned a spot in Saturday’s Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship with a 3-0 win over Mary Washington.  The Spartans (12-5-3) will travel to Salisbury to the face the rival Sea Gulls for the title.  Mary Washington finishes their 2007 campaign posting a solid 10-4-3 mark.

The Spartans came out strong in the first half and controlled the opening minutes of play.  Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) tallied first for the green and white, scoring her seventh goal of the season at the 24:03 mark.  Senior Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) slipped a nifty ball to an on running Stanley.  The junior forward knew exactly what to do with the beautiful pass and slotted her shot into the right side of the goal.  Owning a 1-0 advantage, the Spartans never looked back.

Nearly eight minutes later, Ashley Gross (York, Pa./Eastern York) drove home the Spartans’ second goal of the match.  Kuhn again received credit for the assist after clipping in a great ball to the near post that Gross headed into the Eagle net.  McCarthy got her fingers to the ball but was unable to keep it out of the goal.  Gross recorded her second score of her senior campaign while Kuhn registered her seventh assist.

York went into the halftime break carrying a comfortable 2-0 lead.  In the frame, the Spartans had eight shots, while Mary Washington could only manage one attempt.

Just over 25 minutes into the second stanza, Kayla Denmyer (New Freedom, Pa./Kennard-Dale) put the Spartans up 3-0 after hitting a beautiful shot from outside the penalty box.  After a loose ball scramble pulled McCarthy off her line, the sophomore midfielder lofted an outstanding strike over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm and just above the head of an Eagle defender.  Denmyer’s second tally of 2007 proved to be the final nail in the coffin as the Spartans captured the 3-0 Halloween victory.
York led in shots 17-8 while also coming away with a 5-2 margin in corners.

Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) earned the win in the Spartan net making one save in 80:43 of work.  Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) came in to secure the clean sheet as she was not forced to make a stop.  McCarthy put in a solid performance for the Eagles registering five saves.

On Saturday, the Spartans travel to Salisbury, Md. to take on the defending CAC Champion Sea Gulls for the conference title.  York will look to win its first CAC championship in the program’s history.  Game time will be announced later in the week.  Please visit www.ycpspartans.com for more information.
