Spartans Open CAC Schedule with 2-0 Win

FREDERICK, MD-The York College women’s soccer squad opened their 2007 Capital Athletic?Conference slate with a 2-0 win over Hood College in Frederick, MD on Wednesday. The Spartans, who are ranked 18th in the nation, improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the Blazers, playing their first-ever CAC?women’s soccer game, fall to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Spartans wasted little time in greeting the Blazers to the conference as junior Jill Stanley (Stewartstown,?Pa. /Kennard-Dale) hit a header off a pass from senior Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J. /Washington Township), beating Hood keeper Rachelle Burhman for the tally just 2:26 into the game. The goal was Stanley’s first of the year.

The green and white struck for a second goal when the reigning Spartan Athlete of the Week, Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md. /Archbishop Spalding), received a pass off a Kayla Denmyer (New Freedom, Pa. /Kennard-Dale) corner kick, put the shot on goal. The shot squirted through Burhman’s hands for Sullivan’s third goal of the year.

The Spartans dominated the first half statistics as they outshot the hosts 15-1 while they also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The second half was a scoreless affair as the statistics were a bit more balanced. York squeezed off 11 second half shots while the Blazers had five, including three on target.

Spartan junior Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md. /Arundel) started in goal and played the first 45 minutes as she registered one save. Freshman Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) played the second 45 minutes and notched three saves for York. Burhman allowed the two Spartan goals but she recorded 13 saves for the Blazers.

York finished the game with a 26-6 edge in total shots including a 15-4 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 9-2 bulge in corner kicks.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they make their 2007 home debut against Wesley College. Game time for the CAC contest is set for 1:00 pm at Graham Field.
