YORK, PA-On a wind-swept Graham Field on Saturday afternoon, the
York College women’s soccer team returned to the win column
defeating visiting Haverford 4-0. The Spartans improve their
2007 record to 5-2 (2-0 CAC) while the Fords fall to 2-3 on the
Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) gave the home squad a 1-0 advantage in the 30th minute of action. Carly Bock (Baltimore, Md. / Catonsville) made a great attacking run down the right side of the pitch. Bock sent the ball across the box to the back post where Sullivan hammered home the finish. The Spartans thought they added a second tally only one minute later when Ali Jones (Riva, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) ripped a screamer to the far post but it clanged off the woodwork and into the awaiting arms of Ford goalkeeper Lindsay Festa. Going scoreless for the rest of the half, the green and white took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Shortly after the intermission, York broke through for their second tally in the 49th minute. Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa. / York Catholic) notched her second goal of the season after Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J. / Washington Township) slid a wonderful pass across the goal mouth. Harney tucked her shot just inside the post putting the Spartans up 2-0.
Kuhn handed out her second helper of the match only 54 seconds later when she connected with forward Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa. / Kennard-Dale). Stanley’s near post score was the junior’s second of 2007.
York finished the scoring in the 87th minute as Ilana Kline (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) slipped a sweet through-ball to the on-running Erin Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove). Mummert swiftly out-paced the Haverford defense and slotted her shot past Festa for the Spartans’ fourth goal.
York controlled much of the match registering 12 shots and four corner kicks. The Haverford side was able to mount a few offensive attacks recording six shots of their own to go along with one corner.
Goalkeeper Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md. / Arundel) earns the win in net for the home squad making two saves over her nearly 76 minutes of work. Freshman Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y. / Southampton) played the final 14 minutes to maintain the clean sheet. Despite only making one save, Festa played well in-between the pipes for Haverford as she cut off countless through-balls throughout the match.
York returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4:00 pm as they host Elizabethtown in a non-conference tilt.
