Spartans Fall in Double Overtime at Dickinson
CARLISLE, PA-The York College women’s soccer squad dropped their second straight as the Dickinson College Red Devils handed the Spartans a 2-1 double overtime setback on Wednesday afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans, losers of two straight, fall to 4-2 overall while the Red Devils improve to 3-3.
The Spartans opened the scoring 13:31 into the game as freshman Stephanie Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) hit a beautiful cross that connected with the foot of Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic). Harney drove the ball past Dickinson goalie Kailyn Hartmann for her first goal of the year.
The two teams traded momentum the remainder of the first half. Dickinson edged the Spartans in shots 5-4 while York had the half’s lone corner kick.
The Red Devils exploded out of the half as it took just 22 seconds for Lisa Nichols to hit a cross that went off Spartan goalie Kristy Catelli (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) and onto the foot of Dana Conroy that Conroy one-timed, tying the game at one.
The Spartans had a chance to end the game in regulation as senior Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) drilled a shot off the post with 6:35 remaining in regulation. The Spartans squeezed off four more shots in the final six minutes but none found the mark as the two teams headed to extra time.
In the first overtime, Mergler hit the post twice in the first 1:08 of the extra session as the Spartans continued to have near miss after near miss. The Spartans managed seven shots in the first overtime but none found the back of the net as the squads headed to another ten minute overtime period.
In the second overtime, York again had the better of the offensive attack. York fired off three shots in the first 5:46 of the second extra session. After that third shot, the Red Devils turned the field around as Nichols fed Conroy for the game winner with 3:09 remaining in the second overtime.
The Spartans finished the game outshooting the hosts 27-13 while they had eight corner kicks to two for the hosts.
Catelli finished the game with seven saves while Hartmann recorded seven saves for the Red Devils. Dickinson also recorded two team saves including one in the second overtime prior to Conroy’s game-winning goal.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they face Haverford College in a non-conference tilt. The match is slated to kick off at 2:30 pm.
