YORK, PA – York College head wrestling coach Duane Bastress has announced the Spartans will hold a 3 Day Giving Challenge in conjunction with Spartan Advance and the York College Office of Development.
The Challenge runs from Wednesday, November 1 through the Spartans opening tournament on Saturday, November 4.
The Challenge allows Spartans alums, fans, community members and parents to help make a financial impact on the wrestling program.
"We have such a deep and rich history of successful wrestling at York College," says Bastress, a two-time national champion at York. "We have been very fortunate to have received great support throughout the years from our local wrestling community. York College wrestling has provided me with a great experience as a student-athlete and now as a coach. Obviously, I have great affection for our program. I am hoping this Challenge will enable us to receive some financial support and enable us to give our student-athletes the best experience possible."
Bastress said the funds raised will be used for equipment, a supplement to the Spartan recruiting budget, and other enhancements for his student-athletes.
"Every little bit helps," says Bastress. "We would encourage our alums to give back to a program that has given all of us so much."
Bastress returns a number of key wrestlers including two-time All-American Greg Warner for the 2017-18 season.
"I am very excited about our upcoming season," says Bastress. "We have a great deal of talent in the room and I am looking forward to what we can accomplish. We want to take a large group to Cleveland for the National Championships in March."
The Spartans open the season on Saturday, November 4 when they travel to the Kings College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Spartans open their home schedule on Wednesday, November 15 against Elizabethtown.
The wrestling program's Days of Challenge is in conjunction with the Spartan Advance, York College's official athletic booster club. Spartan Advance boasts over 900 members and is a driving force in our efforts to rise above and to build and maintain a thriving, contemporary intercollegiate athletic program, the Spartan Advance provides enhancements to our recruiting, travel and equipment budgets, and contributes to the support of additional coaching positions.
