YORK, PA – The York College wrestling team celebrated senior night in fine fashion on Friday night as the 21st ranked Spartans downed Gettysburg College 36-6 in non-conference action in Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York.
The Spartans end their regular season with a dual match record of 15-8. The Bullets conclude their regular season with a mark of 9-9.
The Bullets got off to a good start as Lenny Ogozalek earned a 7-6 victory in the 125-pound match up. The Spartans then seized control of the match starting with Ryan Flynn (Eaglesville, Pa./Marple Newtown) at 133 pounds. Flynn started fast as he led 10-0 just two minutes into the match. He would push it to 14-0 at the end of the first period. Flynn then ended the match 38 seconds into the second period with two points to complete the tech fall, 16-0.
Freshman Greg Warner (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) did Flynn one better as he notched an 18-0 tech fall with 13 seconds left in the first period as York's lead grew to 10-3. The Bullets trimmed the Spartan lead to 10-6 as Quinn Merrigan edged John Buhagiar (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) 4-0 in the 149-pound bout.
Senior Cory Rank (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) then had the match of the night at 157-pounds. Rank trailed Gettysburg's Colin Kowalski 2-1 late in the third period with Kowalksi holding more than a minute of riding time. Rank earned an escape to tie the bout at two but he was actually trailing due to the riding time. Rank took down Kowalski inside the last 20 seconds for two points as he earned a 4-3 victory on Senior Night.
That got the Spartans rolling as freshman Frankie Krauss (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) earned a 13-5 major decision to put York up 17-6. Junior Ryan Anthony (Easton, Md./Easton) had another thrilling win for the Spartans as he edged Crawford Oswald 3-2 in double overtime. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and again after the first overtime session. Anthony won in double overtime with a take down to push the Spartan lead to 20-6.
Jesse Huber (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) earned an injury default in the 184-pound match as he had a 10-4 lead before Robby Tarvin had to retire with 45 seconds left in the first period.
Sophomore John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) earned the Spartans second major decision of the night as he blanked Anthony Puca 12-0 in the 197-pound bout.
The final match of the night featured freshly minted 100-match winner Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township). Spencer came out the aggressor early as he took down Camden Stoops just ten seconds into the match. Spencer would pin Stoops 2:15 later, concluding the match for the Spartans. The victory was Spencer's team-high 17th pinfall win of the year. Spencer improves to 25-6 overall. He is tied with Flynn for the most wins on the team this season.
Prior to the match, Spencer, Rank, Chase Colley (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage), Nick Gattinella (Newark, Del./Salesianum), Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and Brett Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) were honored for their contributions to the Spartan program. The seniors have combined to post 64 dual meet wins during their four-year careers.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, February 27 when they head to the Mid-East Regional Championships in Williamsport, PA. The two-day event hosted by Lycoming College kicks off at 9:00 am on Saturday morning and concludes Sunday afternoon.
