Spartans Place Eight at Messiah Open

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Eight Spartan wrestlers placed in the top-eight in their respective brackets on Saturday at the Messiah Open hosted by Messiah College.

10-ranked Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) headlined the group of Spartans as he placed second at 285 with a record of 3-1 on the day. Spencer recorded consecutive first-period pins in his first two matches of the day before receiving an injury forfeit to advance to the championship bout where he eventually surrendered an 11-7 decision. Spencer continues to build on a successful senior campaign as he is now 23-6 and has won 13 of his last 14 matches, including 10 straight entering the day. Spencer's two pins today improves his team-leading total to 15 on the season.

Junior captain Ryan Flynn (Eagleville, Pa. / Marple Newtown) captured York's second-highest placement of the day as he took third at 133 with a 13-3 major decision in the third-place bout. Flynn also had a 9-1 major decision, an 18-3 technical fall and a 3-2 decision victory as he compiled a record of 4-1 on the day. The junior has a record of 23-7 on the season and has won eight of his last nine matches.

Senior Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford) also placed at 133 as he finished sixth in the bracket. Zuzulock went 2-3 on the day with a 3-2 decision victory and a 16-4 major decision. The senior is now 12-8 on the season and has won eight of his last 10 matches.

Freshman Frankie Krauss (Spring City, Pa. / Spring-Ford) and senior Brett Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes) battled it out for fifth place in the 165-pound bracket with Krauss winning the match on a 10-2 major decision. Krauss finished 3-2 on the day with a 15-5 major decision and a victory by forfeit in addition to his 10-2 win in the final bout. Secor placed sixth in the bracket as he went 2-3 on the day with a pin in 2:41 and a 7-2 decision victory. Krauss improves to 18-12 on the season and has won seven of his last nine. Secor is now 3-7 on the season.

Freshman Heriberto Medina (Newton, N.J. / Newton) placed sixth at 125 as he went 2-3 on the day with a victory by forfeit and a pin in 4:54. Heriberto has a varsity record of 4-7 on the season and has won four of his last seven varsity matches.

Sophomore David Keith (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) and senior Cory Rank (Wyomissing, Pa. / Wyomissing) squared off in the seventh-place bout at 157 with Keith winning the match by the narrow margin of 3-2. Keith went 3-2 on the day with a 14-0 major decision and a 12-6 decision victory in addition to his 3-2 win in the final match. Rank placed eighth as he finished 2-3 on the day with a 13-6 decision victory and a pin in 2:16. Keith improves to 10-10 on the season, while is Rank is now 9-14.

The 21st-ranked Spartans return to the mat on Tuesday at home for a dual match against Elizabethtown at 7:00 p.m.
