WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The No. 22 York College wrestling team compiled a record of 3-0 on day one of the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The Spartans won Group B and will compete in the championship bracket tomorrow for a chance to win the tournament title.
The Spartans (7-5) earned victories over King's (Pa.) (3-5), Waynesburg (3-6) and Springfield (3-4), with a quartet of wrestlers posting 3-0 records on the day.
Freshman Greg Warner (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) provided a spark all day long at the front end of the Spartan lineup as he earned his three victories at 141 lbs. with a 16-0 technical fall in his first bout, followed by a 4-2 decision and finished with 9-0 major in his third bout. Warner improves to 10-7 on the season.
Sophomore co-captain Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) turned in a rock solid performance on the day en route to a 3-0 record at 174 lbs. Ramsey began the day with a pin fall (1:35), then scored a 10-3 decision in his second bout and then produced a 5-0 victory which started a run of four-straight Spartan wins to complete the comeback win over Springfield. Ramsey is now 14-6 on the season.
Sophomore John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) had the most critical victory of the day in his final bout of the day as he produced a third period pin fall (5:23) which not only secured his own personal unblemished record, but also set his team up for an undefeated day as he put York ahead by five points heading into the final bout of the day. Shorter also earned a 6-1 decision and 1-0 decision on the day and improves to 16-7 on the season at 197 lbs.
Senior heavyweight Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) provided a solid base to the back end of the lineup as he claimed three victories at 285 lbs. Spencer earned an 8-1 decision in his first bout, then third period pin fall (5:54) in his second bout and finished with 3-2 decision in his third to seal the victory over Springfield and the Group B title for the team. Spencer is now 13-2 on the season.
Match 1: #22 York 38, King`s 6
Sophomore Lake Laughman (New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) gave the Spartans a big boost of momentum to start the match at 125 lbs. with a first period pin fall (1:26). Junior co-captain Ryan Flynn (Eagleville, Pa. / Marple Newtown) followed with a 6-2 decision at 133 lbs. The Spartans then earned two more victories with a 16-0 tech. fall by Warner at 141 lbs. and a 4-0 decision by Jonathan Buhagiar (Bayville, N.J. / Central Regional) at 149lbs.
The Spartans then received back-to-back pin falls at 165 and 174 lbs. to take a 29-6 lead and clinched the victory. Freshman Frankie Krauss (Spring City, Pa. / Spring-Ford) earned a second period pin fall (3:45) at 165 lbs. and then Ramsey secured the team win with a first period pin fall (1:35) at 174 lbs.
York closed out the dual with three decision victories in the final three bouts by freshman Jesse Huber (Levitttown, Pa. / Harry S. Truman) at 184 lbs., Shorter at 197 lbs. and Spencer at 285 lbs.
Match 2: #22 York 26, Waynesburg 9
Flynn put York's first points on the board with an 11-3 major decision at 133 lbs., followed by a 4-2 decision victory by Warner at 141 lbs. and a 3-2 decision by Buhagiar at 149 lbs.
Krauss and Ramsey gave York some much-needed points and momentum in the middle of the lineup. Krauss scored an 11-3 major decision and Ramsey nearly matched Krauss' score with a 10-3 decision win.
Ahead 19-6, Shorter sealed the win for York at 197 lbs. with a 1-0 decision and then Spencer piled on extra points with a pin fall (5:54) at 285 lbs.
Match 3: #22 York 22, Springfield 14
Laughman started off the lineup with a 6-0 decision at 125 lbs. for his second win on the day before Flynn suffered a disappointing overtime loss (6-4) at 133 lbs. Warner swung some momentum back in York's favor with a 9-0 major decision.
The Spartans fell into a 14-5 hole after losing three-straight bouts in the middle of the lineup, but Ramsey stepped up and started a string of four-consecutive Spartan victories to complete the comeback. Huber contributed to that run with a 12-5 decision at 184 lbs. before Shorter pinned his man in the third period (5:23) to put the Spartans ahead 19-14. Spencer closed out the match with a 3-2 decision to seal the victory for the Spartans.
York will face No. 6 Messiah in the first round of the championship bracket tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. With a win over Messiah, the Spartans will advance to the championship match and face the winner of the No. 14 TCNJ/No. 16 Williams match. A loss to Messiah will place the Spartans in the third-place match and will face the loser of the TCNJ/Williams dual. Regardless of the outcome of the first match, York will wrestle its second match at 1:30 p.m.
