YORK, Pa. – The No. 16 York College wrestling team placed sixth out of 16 teams at its own 7th Annual New Standard Corporation Invitational on Saturday at M&T Bank Field House at the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center.
The Spartans compiled a team score of 85 with two individual place winners. No. 13. Ithaca College won the overall team title with a score of 206.5 points with three individual finalists and two champions.
Senior Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) had an outstanding performance as he compiled a record of 5-1 and captured the third place title in the 285 lbs. bracket. Spencer entered the tournament seeded fourth and lived up to his ranking as he recorded four pin falls on the day, including three straight to start the day. Spencer's only loss on the day came in a 3-2 decision to No. 8 nationally ranked Kyle Foster of Roger Willams.
Spencer now has a team-high six pin falls on the season and he improved on a fourth place finish at last season's New Standard Corp. Invitational.
Junior captain and No. 9 ranked Ryan Flynn (Eagleville, Pa. / Marple Newtown) also captured a third place finish in the 133 lbs. bracket as he and Spencer hold the distinction of the only two Spartans to place at the event. Flynn entered the tournament as the second seed in the bracket and compiled a record of 5-1 on the day. Flynn suffered a 10-1 defeat to third-seeded Connor Kirkegard of Delaware Valley, but rallied back with a 4-2 and 1-0 victories to place third.
Flynn is now 15-6 on the season an improved on a fourth place finish at last season's New Standard Corp. Invitational.
Sophomore captain Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) put himself in a tough spot after suffering a disappointing 3-2 loss in overtime in his first match of the day, but Ramsey made the most out of the situation by running off four straight victories in the consolation bracket. Ramsey's day eventually came to an end in the on a 5-2 loss in the consolation quarterfinals, but managed to compile a record of 4-2 on the day.
Freshman Joe Sindoni (Mullica Hill, N.J. / Clearview Regional) put together a solid performance on the day as he battled his way back through the consolation bracket to compile a record of 4-2 on the day. After suffering a 4-3 loss in his second match of the day, the freshman ripped off three straight wins before his day came to a close on a 6-0 loss in the consolation quarterfinals.
