LANCASTER, PA – The York College wrestling team opened the 2015 portion of their campaign with a trip to the David H. Lehman F&M Open on Saturday in Lancaster, PA. There was no team score recorded at the event.
The tournament featured some of the top teams in the region including Division I squads F&M, Penn State, Maryland, Pittsburgh, and Navy and Division II teams from Kutztown, Lock Haven, and Millersville. Messiah joined York as the top Division III teams at the event.
The Spartans had four wrestlers post at least three wins for the day.
Junior Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) was York's top performer in the heavyweight division during the day. Spencer went 4-2 as he advanced to the consolation semifinals before concluding his day. Spencer started his day with a 9-0 major decision win over Millersville's David Wuestner. He followed that with a pin fall win over F&M's Alex Henry. Spencer put Henry on his back in a time of 3:46. Pitt Johnstown's Zac Bennett sent Spencer to the consolation bracket with a win by fall in the championship quarterfinals. Bennett would go on to win the weight class with three of his five wins coming via the fall.
Spencer rebounded with a 5-4 win over Drexel's Alex Foley in his first consolation bracket match. He advanced to the consolation semifinals with another win over Wuestner as Spencer notched the 9-1 major decision. Patrik Garren from the University of Pennsylvania ended Spencer's run with a 7-4 decision in the consolation semifinals. Garren would finish third in the tournament as he won the consolation championship.
Sophomore Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) also had a good day for the Green and White. Flynn finished 4-2 at 133 pounds for the Spartans. Flynn's day didn't start off the best as he fell to Pitt Johnstown's Corey Bush 3-2 in his opening match. Flynn began his trek through the consolation bracket with a 5-2 win over Notre Dame College's Cisco Inchaurregui. Flynn then downed Pitt Johnstown's John Lobeck with a 17-0 tech fall win. The Spartan sophomore continued his march with a 4-1 win over Penn's Marc Mastropietro. Flynn advanced to the consolation semifinals with a medical forfeit win over Kutztown's Zach Ulerick. Flynn saw his day come to an end with a tight 3-1 loss to F&M's Paddy Quinlan.
A pair of Spartans went 3-2 for the day. Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) earned three wins at 157 pounds. He recorded a pin fall win over Bucknell's Logan Kerin in his first match. He then earned a 14-3 major decision over Messiah's Tag Wilber. Virginia's Dustin Roemer sent Kritzer to the consolation bracket with a 6-3 win. Kritzer earned a 12-5 win in his first consolation bout before falling to Franklin & Marshall's Robbie King 10-4 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) was the other Spartan to pick up a trio of wins for the day. He started his tournament with a 10-9 win over Navy's Ryan Harman. He then picked up an injury default win over Shippensburg's Kyle Taylor. Princeton's Scott Gibbons sent Zak to the consolation bracket with a tight 1-0 win in the quarterfinals. Zak bounced back with a 7-3 win over Maryland's Philip Robilotto in his first consolation bracket match. Harman came back and ended Zak's tournament with a 7-1 defeat in the consolation quarterfinals.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 9 when they travel to the Budd Whitehall Duals in Williamsport, PA. The tournament is slated for a 9:00 am start on Friday morning. The tournament is hosted by Lycoming College.
