YORK, Pa – The York College wrestling team went 2-1 Sunday in their home quad match against TCNJ, Shippensburg, and Waynesburg University. The Spartans competed relentlessly in all three rounds, improving their season record to an impressive 5-1 start.
The Spartans downed Shippensburg 20-13, lost to Waynesburg 19-13, and wrapped up the day with a 27-16 win over College of New Jersey.
The Green and White fought hard in round one against Shippensburg University. Freshmen Lake Laughman (New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) put the squad off to an exciting start at the 125-pound weight class with a 6-4 decision in overtime. Sophomore Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square Pa. / Marple Newtown) followed with a 5-3 decision at the 133-pound weight class to give the Spartans to a 6-0 lead. York got a pair of major decisions as junior Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) registered a 9-1 major decision at the 157-pound weight class while sophomore Tyler Rhoads (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) earned a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds. Sophomore Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) and freshmen Nate Bueno (Wallington, N.J. / Becton/Wallington) added one decision each to give York the seven point win.
Round two came down to the final bout in a battle of the unbeatens against Waynesburg University. At a 16-13 disadvantage, York's heavyweight Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) put up a hard battle that ended with a 4-3 decision for Waynesburg's Greg Kumer. Sophomore Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Liberty) led the team at the 184-pound weight class with a 15-3 major decision. Other members of the squad added key decisions to York's team total: freshmen John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) at the 197-pound weight class, Flynn at the 133-pound weight class, and senior Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford) at the 149-pound weight class.
The Spartans ended victoriously with a 27-16 advantage over TCNJ in the final round of the day. Rhoads and Spencer showed no mercy as they each registered a win by fall for the Spartans. Rhoads notched his fall in a nice and tidy 2:40 while Spencer wasn't far behind as his pin came in 2:50. Flynn registered York's first set of points with a 12-4 major decision in the 125-pound weight class. Freshmen Jeffrey Walker (Bristow, Va. / Brentsville) followed with a second consecutive major decision, holding his opponent at 14-0. Zak followed suit, registering his second major decision of the evening with a 13-1 victory in the 184 weight-class. Spector added three points of his own with a 4-1 decision at the 149-pound weight class.
The Spartans return to the mat Nov. 22 in Alliance, Ohio for the Mount Union Duals set to start at 11:00 am.
