YORK, PA – First year York College head wrestling coach Duane Bastress has released the 2013-14 Spartan wrestling schedule.
Bastress, a two-time Spartan national champion, takes over the program from his former coach and fellow Division III Wrestling Hall of Famer Tom Kessler, who stepped away from the program after last season.
Bastress will make his head-coaching debut on November 2 when the Spartans travel to their traditional season opener at the King's College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
York returns to Wilkes-Barre one week later to participate in the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University.
Trips to Lycoming for a match against the Warriors on November 13, a tri-match against Mercyhurst and Waynesburg at Waynesburg on November 16, followed by the Mount Union Duals on November 23 highlight the opening stretch of the season that finds the Spartans on the road for their first five days of competition.
York finally makes their home debut on November 26 when they host Elizabethtown in a regional rivalry that has grown significantly over the last few years.
"The home opener against Elizabethtown is a great way to start our home schedule," says Bastress. "It is a great local rivalry and it's a lot of fun to be a part of."
The Spartans will remain at home for their next event as they host the always loaded New Standard Corporation Invitational on December 7 at the M&T Bank Fieldhouse.
"The New Standard is one of the best tournaments on the east coast and I would expect this year's edition to be much of the same. The quality of the tournament has continued to grow each year and we are very excited to host a tournament of this caliber," states Bastress.
After just under a month away from competition, the Spartans travel to Franklin & Marshall for the F&M Open. The open features primarily Division I competition, which will challenge the Spartan squad to open the spring semester portion of the schedule.
A weekend stay in Williamsport to participate in the Budd Whitehill Duals precedes a trip to the Mid-Penn Duals hosted by Millersville University. The Spartans will be gunning for their third straight Mid-Penn title after capturing the team championship in each of the last two years.
"It's a great opportunity for our guys to get the opportunity to win the Mid-Penns for the third straight year. It's a great chance for fans to see some of the best wrestling that central Pennsylvania can provide," says Bastress.
York will host a tri-match with Penn State Mont Alto and Thaddeus Stevens on February 1 before traveling to the Messiah Open on February 8.
The Spartans conclude the regular season on February 15 as they host Gettysburg at Wolf Gymnasium. That match will be senior day for the Green and White.
The Mid-East Regionals will be held on March 1 with the Division III Championship tournament being held on March 14 and 15.
Bastress is chomping at the bit ready to get the season going.
"I am really excited to get the guys in the room and get started. We have a number of talented guys who are proving to be very dedicated to what we are asking them to do. I think we could have a very successful season. I am ready to go!"
