Pisani Punches Ticket to the National Semifinals with Two Friday Wins
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – York College senior 149-pounder Vinny Pisani (Orange, Calif./El Modena) won both of his matches during the first two sessions of the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Pisani has guaranteed himself of All-American honors, as he will finish among the top eight regardless of his performance on Saturday.
Pisani opened his stay in the tournament with a dominating 14-3 major decision victory over Dubuque's Eric Powell.
His quarterfinal bout was far closer. Pisani trailed St. John's (MN) Chris Stevermer 1-0 early but Pisani held over a minute of riding time advantage. Pisani went down 2-0 before capturing an escape to trim his deficit to 2-1. As regulation expired, Pisani earned the riding time point and the match headed to overtime.
In the extra period, Pisani got a take down just before the expiration of the first overtime to earn the 4-2 sudden victory.
Pisani, who is the 149-pound's seventh seed, will face sixth seeded Greg Sanders from Concordia (WI) for the right to go to the national championship bout. Sanders and Pisani will wrestle at around 11:15 Eastern Time on Saturday morning.
The Spartans had two other wrestlers compete at the championships. Sophomore Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and junior Chuck Glatz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) saw their tournaments come to an early end on Friday. Giaccio dropped an 8-2 decision to Luther's Evan Obert, the sixth seed at 133 pounds. Giaccio bounced back with a 10-4 decision over Augsburg's Tossaporn Suparat in his second match. Giaccio had his tournament ended when he fell to McDaniel's Ryan O'Boyle, the eighth seed, by fall in the match's seventh minute.
Glatz suffered two straight losses as he fell to Luther's Kyle Windquist by fall in his first match. Glatz then dropped a tight 4-1 decision to Centenary's Cory Vemon to be eliminated from the tournament.
Pisani will be the 19th, and final, All-American under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Kessler as the Spartan mentor is stepping down after the season.
Saturday's action will kick off at 9:00 am Central Time in Cedar Rapids.
