Spartans Finish 2-1 on Senior Day

YORK, Pa. – The York College wrestling squad finished 2-1 on senior day on Saturday afternoon at York College. The Spartans beat both PSU-Mont Alto and Thaddeus Stevens 58-0, but fell 6-31 to extremely talented #3 Cortland.

Saturday was a big day for the Green and White. Not only was it senior day, but it was also Coach Kessler's last home meet. Coach Kessler will be retiring at the end of this season after a fantastic 21 years at York.

Before kicking off the meet, the Spartans recognized Coach Kessler along with the teams three seniors Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Vinny Pisani (Orange, Ca./El Modena) and Salvatore DiSimone (Centers Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches).

The #15 Spartans are now 18-6 overall and will look to finish the season out strong with only two away matches left before the NCAA Regional Qualifier.

York started things off trampling over a small PSU-Mont Alto squad, 58-0. Due to the lack of roster for PSU-Mont Alto, the Spartans recorded six pins because of forfeit. Victor Signorelli (Oak Ridge, N.J./Twin Valley), Brett Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), Steven Johns (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional), Korey Eberly (York, Pa./Red Lion), Tom Boylan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and Zach Coleman (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical) earned points off the forfeits. Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was the first to wrestler for the Spartans. At 125 pounds, he earned a pin in 2:36. Following in much the same fashion, Trevor Baez-Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) recorded a pin in 1:06 in the 133-pound weight class. The only other Spartan to wrestle was Cory Rank (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing). Rank earned a 12-2 major decision and helped keep PSU-Mont Alto remain scoreless in the match.

In the Spartans second match of the day, Cortland proved to be a tough opponent. The Green and White jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after Kenny Arentz (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) earned a 6-0 decision at 125 pounds. Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) wrestled well in the 133-pound weight class and took Alec Dierna into overtime, but would fall just short of a victory, 11-9. Chuck Glatz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) got the Spartans back on the board at 141 pounds with a 9-4 decision. Despite some strong wrestling the Spartans could not get another win in the matchup. Brett Brigman (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) fell just short of recording points for York.

To end the day, the Spartans eased their way to a 58-0 win over Thaddeus Stevens. In a matchup that was extremely similar to the first of the day, Thaddeus Stevens was forced to forfeit seven bouts because of a small roster. Arentz earned his second win of the day with an 18-3 technical pin in 5:15. Giaccio, Signorelli, Rank, T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Eberly, Minogue and Spencer all won by forfeit. The only other wrestlers that faced an opponent were Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) and Johns. Kritzer secured a 21-6 technical pin in 5:47 in the 157-pound weight class. Johns recorded a pin in 3:32 at 174 and helped keep Thaddeus Stevens scoreless.

The Green and White return to action on Friday as they travel to Kutztown. The match is set to start at 7:30 pm.
