WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The York College wrestling squad went 1-1 on Saturday and took home a third place finish at the Budd Whitehall Duals in Williamsport, Pa. The Spartans fell to a strong Wisconsin-Stevens Point team 25-11, but rebounded with a 24-13 win over Wabash.
York now holds a 14-5 overall record.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who is ranked 12th in the National Wrestling Coaches Poll, proved to be tough to wrestle. The Spartans put up a fight, but only had three wins in the match.
Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) wrestled extremely well at 133 and earned a technical fall, beating Ryan Osee 19-2. Vinny Pisani (Orange, Ca./El Modena) recorded another victory for himself in the 149-pound weight class, with a 4-2 win over Shane Sweeney. The only other Spartan to score points for the team was Jeffrey Goldhagen (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), who finished with a 3-1 decision at 184.
The Spartans were able to overcome the loss and bounce back for a win over Wabash, as well as a third place finish in the tournament. Freshman Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) started things out in the lightweight division with a pin in 2:18. Giacco looked good again with a 12-1 win. In the 141-pound weight class Victor Signorelli (Oak Ridge, N.J./Twin Valley) narrowly edged out Michael Venezia, 4-3. Pisani recorded a 13-1 major decision to finish the tournament strong. T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) recorded a close 3-2 win at 165 and Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) registered an 11-1 major decision in the 197-pound weight class.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, January 19 for the Mid-Penn Duals hosted by Millersville University. The action kicks off in Millersville at 9:30 am.
