Painesville, Ohio – The York College wrestling squad went 1-2 at the challenging Lake Erie Quad on Saturday afternoon in Painesville, Ohio. The Spartans defeated Waynesburg 22-15 before falling 31-13 to Division II Tiffin and 19-18 to Division II Lake Erie.
Kenny Arentz (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) kicked off the first match against Waynesburg with a pin. Arentz was able to pin his opponent in 5:25. Next up, freshman Trevor Baez-Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) wrestled at 133-pounds and was able to come away with a 7-6 decision over Alex Crown, the fourth ranked wrestler in Division III according to the NWCA. Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y.) finished with a 9-1 major decision at 197 pounds. In the heavyweight division, Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) helped finish off the win for the Spartans with a pin at the 5:40 mark.
Against Tiffin, the Spartans struggled in the lower weight classes. Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) was bumped up to the 157-pound weight class and earned a 14-5 major decision over Zach Tiell. After Kritzer, T.J. Demetrio (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) was able to earn more points for York with a 9-4 decision. Minogue wrestled well again and recorded a pin in 2:10 as the Spartans lost to the tough Dragon squad.
The Green and White fell just short of beating a strong Lake Erie team. The Spartans continued to struggle to score points in the lower weight classes. Kritzer added to his strong day recording a 10-5 decision over #2 ranked Seth Vandermeer. Seth Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) stepped up for the Spartans and was able to earn a pin in 1:09. In his third match of the day, Minogue earned his third win with an 8-5 decision. Spencer finished off the day for the Spartans with a pin in 6:37.
The Spartans return to action at home on Saturday, December 1 for the New Standard Corporation Invitational. The meet is set to start at 9:30 am.
