Spartans Wrestlers Go 3-1 at John Reese Duals
WILKES-BARRE, PA – The York College wrestling squad rolled to a trio of victories at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Spartans defeated Kings 34-7 before suffering their lone loss of the day, a 23-12 setback to eighth ranked Centenary. The Spartans bounced back by drilling New York University 37-3 and Oneonta 33-9.
York is now 3-1 overall for the campaign.
In the opening match, the Spartans jumped on the Monarchs early as freshman Kenny Arentz (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted a 14-8 win over Jamie Scarantino in the 125-pound bout. That started a run of five straight Spartan victories as they seized control of the match. Taylor Boyd (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) earned a pin fall win at 133 as the Spartan led 9-0. Chuck Glatz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) earned a 5-2 win at 141 for the Spartans and he was followed by Vinny Pisani (Orange, Calif./El Modena) who earned a tight 3-2 win at 149-pounds. Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) increased the York lead to 19-0 when he posted a 13-3 major decision win at 157 pounds.
The Monarchs got on the board with a decision at 165 and a major decision victory at 174 to cut the Spartan lead to 19-7. The Spartans closed out the match with victories at 184, 197, and 285. Jeff Goldhagen (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) earned a 6-0 win at 184 while Kyle Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) pinned King's Ryan Longenberger in a mere 53 seconds at 197. Freshman Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) finished the match off with a forfeit win at 285.
The Spartans' second match saw the Green and White fall to eigth-ranked Centenary. York got off to a great start with wins from Arentz at 125 and from Trevor Baer-Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) in the 133-pound bout as York took an early 6-0 lead. The Cyclones got on the board with a win at 141 but Pisani earned an 8-5 win at 149 to push York's lead to 9-3. Centenary would then rip off four straight wins to seize a 13-9 lead. Seth Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) brought the Spartans to within one at 13-12 with his 3-2 win at 184-pounds. The Cyclones earned a pin at 197 and got a decision at 285 to close out the match
York rebounded nicely in the NYU match as the Spartans won nine of the ten weight classes in the victory. Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) started the match with a forfeit win at 125. Boyd and Glatz rolled to back-to-back major decision victories before Cory Rank (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) was awarded a forfeit win at 149 pounds. Kritzer earned a major decision win at 157 and was followed by a Steven Johns (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) 10-4 win at 165. Kam Mueller (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) registered a 3-1 win at 174 as the Spartan lead grew to 31-0. Goldhagen won a 6-2 decision at 184 and Minogue followed with a 19-4 major decision as the York lead grew to 38-0. The Violets got a win at heavyweight and York lost a team point to provide for the final score.
The final match of the day was another big victory for the Green and White. Arentz capped a 3-0 day with a quick pin fall win at 125. The Red Dragons got on the board with a win at 133 and then tied the match at six with a win at 141. Pisani got the Spartans back on the right track with an 18-5 major decision at 149. After an Oneonta win at 157, the Spartans captured the final five weight classes of the match. Tom Menetris earned a 7-4 win at 165 followed by a Mueller major decision at 174. Snyder notched his second win of the day with a pin fall win at 184. Minogue picked up his third win of the day with a major decision at 197 while Spencer earned a pin fall win at 285.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday evening when they host Lycoming in a non-conference meet at M&T Bank Field House at the Grumbacher Center. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
