Heisey Named Scholar All-American; Spartans 25th in Nation Academically
YORK, Pa. – York College senior wrestler Matt Heisey received a great honor as he garnered a Division III Scholar All-American award from the National Wrestling Coaches Association after an outstanding 2011-2012 season. Heisey becomes the 21st wrestler in Spartan wrestling history to be named a Scholar All-American as those 21 wrestlers have achieved the honor 29 times. Additionally, the York College wrestling team received Scholar All-American status with a team GPA of 3.167, which ranks 25th in the nation.
Heisey's outstanding 3.77 grade point average as well as his on-the-mat accomplishments placed him among the elite wrestling student-athletes in the country. A mechanical engineering major from Lebanon, Pa., qualified for his first NCAA tournament appearance after winning the 2012 Metropolitan Conference Championship at 174 pounds, his first league title. He finished the season with a record of 28-10, his best individual season in an outstanding career as the Spartan finishes a 75-46 overall record.
"Matt has done an outstanding job in and out of the classroom," Spartan head coach Tom Kessler said. "He worked extremely hard on the mats winning the Metropolitan Championship this year at 174. In the classroom he was simply outstanding becoming York's 29th Academic All American with a 3.77 GPA in the mechanical engineering program. Matt is the kind of athlete we want at York successful in the classroom and on the wrestling mats.
"Matt is the kind of athlete we want at York, Kessler continued. Successful in the classroom and on the wrestling mats. As a program we ask all the guys to set a goal of becoming an Academic AA and maintain over a 3.0."
The Spartans completed their 2011-2012 season with a record-setting 25-4 mark. The team captured second-place at the Metropolitan Conference Championships, and sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships, where York finished 12th overall.
