Kutztown Scoots By #15 Spartans in Friday Tilt

YORK, Pa.  – The York College wrestling team, currently ranked #15 in Division III, fell to visiting Kutztown University Friday evening 25-14 at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in York. With the loss the Spartans fall to 24-4 while the Golden Bears improve to 7-4 on the season.

In the night's most exciting match, York's #2 Alex Martocello picked up a thrilling 11-6 triumph over Giovanni Ortiz in the 184-pound bout. Early in the first period, it appeared as though Martocello was looking for an abrupt takedown with an attempt to turn Ortiz over the Spartan senior's left side. However, Martocello was not quite able to finish the move allowing Ortiz to take advantage and score four quick points – two from a takedown and two more from a near fall. Edging back throughout the match, Martocello found himself trailing 6-4 with little time remaining on the third period clock. At that point, the pair was in a neutral position, giving Martocello an opportunity for the tying takedown. Shooting late, the senior worked to gain control and was eventually awarded those two crucial points with a fraction-of-a-second left in the third. Forcing overtime, the senior finished the match, nearly pinning a tough Ortiz, and garnered five more points to complete his 26th victory of the season and move to 26-1.

Fellow senior captain George Saliba secured his 30th triumph of the 2011-12 campaign courtesy of an 11-2 major decision. The steady Saliba put together a workmanlike effort to notch the victory as he now moves to an impressive 30-3 on the year.

The Spartans also picked up wins at 141 and 149 pounds. In the 141-bout, #3 Chris Albright netted a tight 2-0 victory to edge out the triumph. That win allows Albright to break the 20-win plateau and move to 20-2. Junior Chris Gugliotti's performance at 149 provided a bonus point for the Green and White as he captured a 10-2 major and pushes his season mark to 28-10.

Trent Bond nearly posted the win at 157 pounds. Tied 2-2, Bond attempted to put together a late push but came up just short, falling 3-2 by riding time.

York's loss brings their 11-match win streak to a close. Their last defeat before tonight came against Ohio Northern at the Budd Whitehill Duals on January 13, a loss which snapped another 11-match winning streak.

The Spartans will look to get back into the win column as they close out the 2011-12 regular season next Friday evening. York hosts McDaniel in a 7:00 pm tilt from the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Prior to the match, Spartan seniors Martocello, Saliba, Matt Heisey, Dylan Giandalia, and Albert Gleichauf will be recognized for their contributions to the program throughout their time with the Spartans.
