WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The 11th ranked York College wrestling squad had an outstanding second day at the Budd Whitehill Duals on Saturday in Williamsport, PA. The Spartans picked up a trio of victories as the Green and White finished fifth in the highly competitive 20-team field. With the three wins, the Spartans improve to 17-3 overall as York has won 14 of its last 15 matches.
In their opening match of the day, the Spartans dispatched College of New Jersey 29-16. Freshman Joey Giaccio earned an injury default win just 17 seconds into his bout against Joey DiCarlo in the 125-pound match. The Lions took a 9-6 lead after they got a decision at 133 and a pinfall at 141. Junior Chris Gugliotti gave the lead back to the Spartans as he notched a 9-1 major decision at 149. In the see-saw match, the Lions recorded wins at 157 and 165 to take a 16-10 lead. The Green and White then captured the final four weight classes to turn a close match into a 13-point York victory.
Senior Matt Heisey started the run with an 8-4 win at 174-pounds. Freshman Cody Ambrose then put York up on top for good with a pinfall victory at 184-pounds. Junior Kyle Minogue posted a dominating 12-1 major decision win while senior George Saliba closed out the win with a injury default win at heavyweight, providing for York's final margin of victory.
York then advanced to face the tournament's sixth seed, Wabash College. York recorded a 24-14 win over the Little Giants. The Green and White began the match with another Giacco win as he posted an 11-3 major decision victory at 125 pounds. Chuck Glatz earned a 4-0 win at 133 pounds and he was followed by a Chris Albright win at 141 as York led 10-0 early. The Little Giants got back-to-back major decision wins at 149 and 157, cutting the York lead to 10-8. York's Trent Bond and Heisey recorded wins at 165 and 174 respectively with Heisey notching a major decision, pushing the York advantage to 15-8. Wabash got their final points on a pinfall at 184 but the Spartans received a Minogue win at 197 and a Saliba major decision at heavyweight to close out the match.
In York's final match of the day, the Green and White got the opportunity to avenge one of their 2011-12 losses. The Spartans did just that as they defeated Messiah 22-18 in the fifth place match. The Falcons, who were the tournament's fourth seed, opened the match with wins at 125 and 133. Albright got the Spartans on the board with a quick pin fall victory at 141 pounds. Gugliotti earned his third win of the day with a tech fall victory at 149 as York took an 11-9 lead. The Falcons recaptured the lead with wins at 157 and 165. Heisey gave York a temporary 17-15 lead with a 10-2 win at 174. The Falcons took their final lead with a win at 184 but Minogue and Saliba came up big for the Spartans, notching wins at 197 and heavyweight. Minogue earned a 10-4 win while Saliba notched a major decision.
The Spartans return to action on Friday night when they host Kings College. Prior to the Spartans' match, West York High School and Central York High School will square off in a YAIAA match. The Spartans' match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
