WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The 11th ranked York College wrestling squad went 2-1 during the first day of the highly competitive Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA on Friday. The Spartans defeated RIT 23-21 in the opening round. The Green and White then bounced Rhode Island 29-9 in the second round. York's 11-match win streak came to an end in the day's final match as York fell to Ohio Northern, 19-16.
The Spartans are the tournament's second seed and are now 14-3 overall after the day's action.
The Spartans opened the tournament with the victory over RIT. The Spartans jumped out on top in the match as Joey Giacco posted an 11-2 major decision at 125 pounds, putting the Spartans on up 4-0. The Tigers took a temporary 6-4 lead as Rory Bruce earned a pin at 133. The Spartans responded with three straight wins including a Chris Albright pin at 141 and a Chris Gugliotti major decision win at 149. Those three wins gave York a 17-6 lead midway through the match. The Tigers picked up a win at 165 but York countered that with a Matt Heisey victory at 174 as the York advantage stood at 20-9. The Tigers captured two of the final three weight classes as the Spartans rested standouts Alex Martocello at 184 and George Saliba at heavyweight. Kyle Minogue notched a 9-3 win at 197 to provide for York's final victory of the match.
In the big win over Rhode Island, Giacco again got York off to a quick start with an 8-4 win at 125 pounds. Chuck Glatz pushed the York lead to 7-0 with a 9-1 major decision at 133 pounds. Albright kept the Spartan train rolling with a 6-1 decision at 141 pounds. The Anchormen picked up three wins in a row, trimming the York lead to 12-9 with four weight classes remaining. The Spartans responded emphatically by sweeping the final four bouts including two by pin, to roll to the 20-point win. Heisey notched a 16-4 major decision win at 174 while Cody Ambrose posted a pin in 2:01 at 184 pounds. Minogue picked up his second win of the day with a pinfall win at 197 while Saliba closed out the match with a 5-2 win.
In the championship quarterfinals, the Polar Bears from Ohio Northern got off to a good start as they earned victories in the 125-pound and 133-pound bouts, taking a 6-0 in the process. Albright got York on the board with a major decision win at 141. Gugliotti gave York a 9-6 lead courtesy of a big 16-0 technical fall at 149-pounds. The Polar Bears recaptured the lead as they posted three consecutive victories, seizing a 16-9 advantage. York answered as Marticello, the nation's second ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, recorded an 11-3 major decision win to keep York in the match. Ohio Northern got what proved to be the match-winning bout at 197 as Michael Pawlitz earned a 5-0 decision for ONU. Saliba recorded a 3-0 win at heavyweight as York lost for the first time in their last 12 matches.
York returns to action on Saturday morning as they face either Trine or TCNJ in the consolation round. York's Saturday will begin at 9:00 am in Williamsport.
