WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The #22 York College wrestling team picked up a pair of quality wins Saturday at the Wilkes Quad in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Spartans bested Delaware Valley 23-12, topped #11 Wilkes 22-13, and finished off the day against Muhlenberg however no team score was kept.
Beginning the day against Delaware Valley, Joey Giaccio got the Spartans going with a 5-1 decision at 125 pounds. His three-point decision marked the rookie's ninth win of the season as he stands at 9-3 just 12 matches into his college career.
All-American Chris Albright added six-more points to the York ledger in his 141 pound bout. Five minutes into the match, Albright recorded a pinfall triumph to improve his season record to 5-0.
After a tough run of bouts, which resulted in a 12-9 Delaware Valley lead, York snagged four straight victories to secure the match. Matt Heisey got the Green and White back on track with an 8-2 win at 174 pounds before #1 Alex Martocello posted a 16-1 technical fall victory at 184. Kyle Minogue and George Saliba closed out the Spartan win with a pair of triumphs at 197 and 285, respectively. Minogue collected an 11-4 result while Saliba edged out a 3-2 victory.
Facing Wilkes in their second match of the day, the Spartans would win seven of the ten matches to best the #11-ranked squad in Division III. Giaccio recorded his tenth victory of the season with a 9-6 win to give the Spartans the opening lead after the 125-pound bout. At 141 pounds, Albright captured a 9-0 triumph over #10 Ryan Wilson before T.J. Demetrio snagged three points at 157 pounds courtesy of a 3-1 victory to give York a 10-9 advantage midway through the match.
It again proved the Green and White's final four weight classes that brought home the team triumph for York. Heisey recorded a 7-3 decision as he improves his overall record to 10-6 for his senior campaign. Martocello followed Heisey's efforts with another three points for the Spartan side. The senior captain posted a 9-2 win as he improves to a stellar 17-1 overall for 2011-12. Grabbing a 9-5 win at 197, Minogue moved his season tally to 14-5 as he gave York a 19-13 lead. Saliba then completed the Green and White team win with a favorable 3-1 result at 285.
Against Mulenberg, which only brought one wrestler, Landry Badman collected a 5:34 pinfall at 141 pounds to record his sixth victory of the season.
With their fall semester slate now complete, the Spartans are scheduled to return to action on January 6, 2012 as York is slated to participate in the two-day North/South duals in Collegeville, Pa.
