YORK, Pa. – Chris Albright led the #22 York College wrestling team to a tie for third at the New Standard Corporation Invitational in York on Saturday. The tournament, which featured five ranked squads and a bevy of ranked wrestlers, saw the Spartans deadlock with #24 The College of New Jersey at 85.5 points while #4 Ithaca grabbed the top spot with 107 points. Brockport took second with 87.5 points.
Albright was simply fantastic for the Green and White as he picked up the title at 141 pounds, defending his New Standard championship from last season. The Spartan junior went 4-0 in en route to his tournament victory, including triumphs over two of the top three 141-pound wrestlers in Division III. After ripping through his first two matches, Albright found himself in the semifinals against #3 Andrew Zobac of North Central College. The Spartan proved on the better end of the close match, reaching the finals with a 7-6 triumph. In the championship bout, Albright met with #2 Seth Ecker of Ithaca, the 2010 national champion at 133 pounds. At 141 this season, Ecker and Albright wrestled to a tight 3-2 match with Albright gaining the better of the result to capture the title.
Aside from Albright's championship, York collected three runner-up finishes and a third-place nod.
Senior Alex Martocello grabbed one of those second-place finishes at 184 pounds. Martocello, who was recently elevated to the #1 spot at 184 in Division III, reached the semifinals by way of a pair of technical falls. In that semifinal bout, he bested Merchant Marine's Eric Schott 6-2 to set up a rematch with TCNJ's Mike Denver, the #2 ranked wrestler at 184. Familiar foes, Denver and Martocello squared off against each other three times last season – in the title bout of last year's New Standard Invitational and Metropolitan Conference Championship as well as at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament – as Martocello won the Metro bout while Denver snagged the other two. In today's title match, the pair stretched the bout all the way to overtime at 7-7. In that overtime session, Denver caught Martocello for the pinfall triumph. Despite not picking up the title, Martocello posted a quality 4-1 showing to improve to 14-1 on the season.
In the 197-pound division, Kyle Minogue placed second as he went 2-1 on the day. He opened his tournament with an 11-3 triumph over Johnson & Wales' Blake McNulty. Minogue then won his semifinal bout 3-2 as he edged Ithaca's Thomas Heckman, who had earlier beaten the weight's top seed. In the championship, Minogue dropped a 6-2 score to Brockport's Paul Glover. For his efforts, Minogue ups his season mark to 11-5.
Senior George Saliba snagged second at 285 pounds in his final New Standard Invitational. After posting a pinfall triumph just 1:16 into his first bout of the day, Saliba snagged a tight 2-1 overtime victory to reach the semifinals. Facing Tom Foote of Williams, the #9 wrestler at 285 in Division III, Saliba again picked up a one-point win as he slipped by Foote with a 3-2 triumph. In the finals for the second time in as many seasons – Saliba won the 2010 New Standard at 197 pounds – the senior ran into Ithaca's Matthew Mahon, the #8 wrestler at 285. Mahon, who picked up the 285 title at the New Standard last season, bested Saliba by a 13-0 count. Despite the final result, Saliba does improve to a strong 13-3 for his senior campaign.
Collecting a third-place finish for the Green and White, Chris Gugliotti registered a 4-1 day for York. Posting a 50-second pinfall in his first match, Gugliotti then bested Coast Guard's Michael Giorgio 9-2. In the semfinals, the junior narrowly lost to Ithaca's Kevin Collins by a slim 4-3 margin. Pushed to the consolation bracket, Gugliotti snagged his next match 9-5 before facing Anthony D'Amico for third place. Gugliotti registered a 19-0 technical fall over D'Amico, who had bested tenth-ranked Martin Bell of Merchant Marine by a 12-3 result earlier in the day.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, December 7, as they host Gettysburg. Match time from York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center is slated for 7:00 pm in the M&T Bank Field House.
