GRANTHAM, Pa. – The #17 York College wrestling squad put together a 2-1 mark at the Messiah Duals on Saturday in Grantham, Pa. The Spartans opened the event with a 22-19 loss to #29 Messiah before topping Waynesburg, 18-15, and Lake Erie, 29-13, in the latter two matches to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Highlighting York's day, freshman Joey Giaccio posted an excellent Saturday, as he won each of his three matches at 125 as he improves to 5-1 on his young career. In tremendous fashion, the rookie bested Waynesburg's Alex Crown, Division III's top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds. Giaccio topped Crown, a 2010-2011 All-American who finished fourth at the NCAA National Championships last year, by a 5-0 score
Alex Martocello, Chris Gugliotti, and George Saliba each posted 3-0 marks as they continue their stellar starts to the year. Martocello, Division III's #2 wrestler at 184 pounds, collected two decisions and one major decision to improve to a flawless 11-0 early in his senior campaign. Gugliotti's 3-0 effort gives him an 11-2 mark on the year while Saliba posted a pair of pinfalls in addition to a decision. The senior captain improves to 10-2 thus far this season.
In the opening tilt against the host Falcons, the Spartans opened up with a 3-0 lead and held an advantage throughout much of the match. However, Messiah came back to take a 16-13 lead after the 174-pound match. Martocello knotted the score at 16-16 with a 10-6 decision. The Falcons' Charles Jones totaled a six-point pinfall at 197 pounds, which proved enough to capture the victory for Messiah.
In what proved to be almost the opposite flow of the match, York had to battle back from a deficit to claim their 18-15 triumph over Waynesburg. Falling behind by as much as 15-6, the Spartans rattled off victories at 184, 197, and 285 to reel in the win. Martocello won at 184 while Kyle Minogue captured the 10-8 triumph at 197. Saliba delivered the knockout punch as he secured the final six points for the Spartans with a 1:08 pinfall in the 285-pound match. York completed the match with a 12-0 run to garner their fourth triumph of the season.
Win number five came against Lake Erie as York picked up the 29-13 victory. Giaccio, Chuck Glatz, and Gugliotti won three of the Spartans' first four matches to take a 10-4 lead. After a Lake Erie spurt to take a 13-10 advantage, senior captain Matt Heisey picked up a 5-4 win at 174 pounds to tie the match at 13-13 before Martocello, Minogue, and Saliba followed with three more triumphs. Minogue and Saliba finished off the match with back-to-back pinfalls.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 3, when they host the New Standard Corporation Invitational. Wrestling action from the M&T Bank Field House inside York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center is slated for 9:30 am.
