HARRISBURG, PA – The tenth-ranked York College wrestling squad went 2-1 at Saturday's Wrestle for a Cure event held at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, PA. The Spartans went 2-1 as they defeated American International 27-12 and #30 Johns Hopkins 27-13 before tying Shippensburg 18-18. The tie against the Red Raiders turned into a loss when Shippensburg won on criteria.The Spartans are now 2-1 for the dual meet season.
Against American International, the Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as Joey Giaccio earned a 14-7 win at 125 followed by a Chuck Glatz 7-0 win at 133 pounds. The Yellow Jackets got on the board with a win at 141 but York responded with a pair of wins at 149 and 157. Spartan Chris Gugliotti earned a pinfall win at 149 while T.J. Demetrio earned an 8-2 decision at 157 as the Spartans took a 15-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets earned a pair of major decisions win cut the Spartan advantage to 15-12. The Green and White responded by with decisions by Alex Martocello at 184 and Kyle Minogue at 197 followed by a pinfall win by George Saliba at heavyweight as the Spartans cruised to the win.
York next faced off against #30 Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead as they captured two of the first three weight classes. Freshman Jimmy Ciampi earned a 6-3 win at 133 to get the Green and White on the board. Gugliotti picked up a win at 149 but the Blue Jays extended their lead to 10-6 after a win at 157. The Spartans then notched wins in four of the final five weight classes, securing the team victory. Trent Bond recorded a 6-2 win at 165 followed by a Martocello win via forfeit at 184. Minogue and Saliba each win by fall at 197 and heavyweight as York closed out the match with power.
The match against Shippensburg has historically been close. In four of the last five matches against the Red Raiders, the match result has come down to the end. The teams tied 18-18 on November 12, 2008 while York picked up a one-point win and a four-point win during the 2010-11 season. The match started with York picking up a forfeit win at 125. The Red Raiders took an 8-6 lead courtesy of major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds. Gugliotti put the Spartans up 9-8 thanks to a tight 6-5 win at 149 pounds. Demetrio earned a 5-4 at 157 as the Spartans took a 12-8 advantage. The Red Raiders recaptured the lead with a decision at 165 and a major decision at 174 as they took a 15-12 lead. The Spartans responded with a Martocello win at 184, tying the match at 15. Minogue then gave York an 18-15 lead with a solid 6-1 win at 197. The Red Raiders earned the tie, and eventually the win, as Daniel Estricher earned a 3-2 win at heavyweight. The Red Raiders won on criteria 3.12.4, first take down.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Lycoming to face the Warriors in a dual meet. The action is set for a 7:00 pm start.
