YORK, Pa. – Junior York College wrestler Alex Martocello has been named this week's Spartan-Athlete-of-the-Week. This is the second time Martocello has been honored with the accolade.
Martocello, the Spartans' 184-pound junior captain, achieved All-American status this weekend as he finished fourth at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships in LaCrosse, Wis. Martocello and teammate Chris Albright became the 24th and 25th All-Americans in program history.
In his first match Martocello defeated Andrew Roberts of Cornell College 9-3. The junior captain had four takedowns in the match including two in the third period.
After suffering a loss, Martocello came back strong Friday evening and posted a 6-2 decision against Merchant Marine's Scott Lowe. Martocello scored a reversal and a takedown in the second period to take control of the match and secure his All-American status.
On Saturday, Martocello posted two wins to reach the consolation finals. In the semifinals against Coe's Seth Rehn, Martocello had a tremendous third period with a takedown, a reversal, and a two-point nearfall to win 9-6 and ensure his spot in the third-place match.
Martocello ended his junior year with an outstanding 32-6 record including a Metropolitan Conference title and his first All-American honor.
