LaCROSSE, Wis. – The York College wrestling team adds two more All-Americans to their ledger as 184-pound Alex Martocello and 141-pound Chris Albright finished the NCAA National Wrestling Championships today in LaCrosse, Wis. Martocello, a junior captain for the Spartans, captured fourth overall while sophomore Albright snagged fifth.
Martocello put together a quality Saturday as he wrestled all the way back to the third-place match. Opening up the consolation quarterfinals against Elmhurst's Josef Rau, Martocello collected a tight 4-3 decision. The Spartan junior did all his offensive work in the first period as he recorded two takedowns in the period. Rau could only manage two escape points and one riding time point as Martocello moved on the consolation semifinals.
There, Martocello faced-off with Coe's Seth Rehn in a markedly more offensive bout. This time, Martocello scored a majority of his point later in the match, tallying eight of his nine point over the final two periods. Heading into the third tied at 3-3, the offense opened up as the Spartan recorded a takedown, a reversal, and a two-point nearfall to secure the 9-6 triumph.
Now in the consolation finals, Martocello looked to snag third-place overall. Alas, that would not be the case as Dustin Baxter from St. John's (Minn.) bested the Spartan in a tight 3-2 match.
Martocello closes out his tremendous junior campaign with a spectacular 32-6 mark, a Metropolitan Conference title, and his first All-American honor.
Albright began his day against #1-seeded Bebeto Yewah of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. In that match, Yewah simply go the better of the Spartan standout as he posted a 14-5 major decision over Albright.
Moving to the consolation finals, Albright squared-off against St. Olaf's Ryan Timmerman. That match also did not go Albright's way as Timmerman registered a 12-7 decision.
In the fifth-place bout however, Albright returned to the win column. Against Cortland's Aljamain Sterling, the Spartan sophomore recorded a 6-4 win, which included takedowns in each of the first two periods. Leading 4-0 heading into the third, Albright surrendered a pair of takedowns but was able to escape each time to secure the 6-4 triumph.
Albright's outstanding season comes to a close as he finishes with a remarkable 34-3 record, a Metropolitan Conference title, and his first All-American honor.
The close of the NCAA National Championships brings the 2010-2011 York wrestling season to an official end. Overall the Spartans put together a stupendous 21-5-1 mark as they tied their program record for wins in a season while also making a return to national rankings reaching as high as #12 during the season.
The Spartans now bid adieu to seniors Jerrid Hartman and James Laughlin who each had quality final years for York. The 125-pound Hartman finished the season with an 18-13 mark while Laughlin went 12-2 at 285 pounds.
