YORK, Pa. – York College junior wrestler Alex Martocello has been selected as the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for February 28 after his tremendous performance at the Metropolitan Conference Championships.
Martocello was nothing short of fantastic as he picked up his first Metro Conference title at the one-day tournament in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. while also securing the championships' Outstanding Wrestler honor.
After securing a pinfall and an 11-6 decision over his first two bouts, Martocello entered the championship round against TCNJ's Mike Denver, who ranked #3 at 184 pounds in Division III. Perhaps Martocello's most impressive performance came in that title bout as Denver had bested Martocello in each of the pair's five previous meetings, including a pair of decision wins this season. In what simply proved to be Martocello's day, he opened up as much as an eight-point advantage at 11-3 at one point and nearly pinned Denver during that run. Martocello would finish out the remainder of the bout to secure the 11-8 decision and now moves onto the NCAA Championships with a 28-4 record.
Martocello and teammate Chris Albright, the conference champion at 141 pounds, are now in preparations for the upcoming NCAA National Championships in LaCrosse, Wis. Making their first trips to nationals, Martocello and Albright begin the tournament on Friday, March 11.
