What a day of wrestling at the 2011 Metropolitan Conference Championships. The Spartans had a pair of wrestlers pick up individual titles as Alex Martocello and Chris Albright captured the crowns at 184 and 141 pounds, respectively! Adding to that however, Martocello was chosen as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, a tremendous honor indeed.
On a personal note, I am definitely proud of Alex. He has continued to work hard and push himself to improve throughout his career. In his previous five bouts with Mike Denver (the wrestler from TCNJ he faced in this year's finals, who coincidentally pinned Alex in last year's Metro finals) Martocello came out on the short end. However, this time Martocello took it to Denver right away and nearly pinned Division III's #3 wrestler at 184 before taking home the title by an 11-8 decision. Great job, Alex!
Albright himself has had a marvelous season, posting a remarkable 31-1 record thus far. Having the opportunity to talk with him several times this year, he is a tremendous wrestler who is dedicated to his craft, and understands what it takes to be successful. More importantly however, he is simply a nice guy who knows when to turn it on. Keep up the great work, Chris!
Overall, the Spartans had a solid day. York finished third out of the 11 squads in attendance, which is quite a jump up after being seventh out of nine teams just a season ago.
And overall, what a season the Green and White have had. Tying the program record of 21 team wins, roaring back into the national rankings, and simply improving across the board. Great work this year fellas!
With their victories, Martocello and Albright have garnered trips to the NCAA National Tournament in LaCrosse, Wis. on March 11 and 12. It will be both wrestlers first trips to the NCAAs and one that I am sure both will relish. Best of luck to both Alex and Chris!
Thank you to everyone who followed the Spartans during today's Metro Championships and, of course, throughout the year. Make sure to check back on March 11 and 12 to see how Martocello and Albright fair among the nation's best.
Let's go, York!

A strong past few hours for the Spartans! The Green and White now have three wrestlers in the finals of their respective weight classes - Chris Albright (141), Alex Martocello (184), and James Laughlin (285)! Pretty exciting to say the least.
Laughlin's bout, which actually just ended a short while ago, proved a quality comeback triumph. Down in the third period 3-1, Laughlin recorded an escape point to cut his disadvantage to 3-2. Laughlin then registered a takedown with less than a minute remaining, which would prove to be the winning points. He did a great job of riding out the final few seconds, as he had to do it twice after the pair left the mat, to record the triumph.
Very exciting for the Spartan program to have a trio of wrestlers in the finals. Notably, Martocello will be facing off with Mike Denver of TCNJ who has had the Spartan's number over the previous two seasons. However, Martocello has drastically narrowed the gap this year and is primed for a triumph!
Albright will look to bring home his first Metro Conference title and snag the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Stay tuned for more action from the Metros. Also, there is slated to be a video stream of the final bouts which can be accessed by clicking here. (Note: Viewing is limited to approximately 200 viewers.)

Things keep rolling right along here at the Metros! A lot of wrestling has already occurred as we make our way through the brackets.
As of right now, three Spartans remain in the winner's bracket - Chris Albright (141), Alex Martocello (184), and James Laughlin (285). Albright, Martocello, and Laughlin each looked great in their opening bouts as Albright and Laughlin won by tech fall and Martocello picked up a pinfall triumph.
After talking to Jerrid Hartman yesterday however, the ability of York's wrestlers to come back in the bottom bracket will be key to the team's overall success today.
Hopefully those Spartan wrestlers who have suffered a loss will put together tremendous performances throughout the remainder of the day.
While we have a second, I want to extend a special thank you to Bob Ziadie from King's College's sports information office for his hospitality today! Overall, the entire King's staff has done a great job as things seem to be running very smoothly at this point in the tournament.
Thanks to everyone checking on our Spartans as well! Hopefully we'll have more and more good news to report as the day goes forward. Let's go, York!
