Spartans Take Two; Close Out Home Slate
YORK, Pa. – The #17 York College wrestling squad picked up two more victories today as they bested visiting Shippensburg and Thaddeus Stevens in the Spartans' final home meet of the 2010-2011 season. The Green and White, who improved their season mark to 19-4-1 topped Division II Shippensburg 16-15 and then rolled to a 51-6 triumph over Thaddeus Stevens.
The match against the Red Raiders proved an exceptionally tight one throughout the ten bouts. Shippensburg kicked off the tri-meet with a pair of victories to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead.
York's Chris Albright, currently Division III's #3-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, proved the remedy for that brief losing spurt. Albright snagged an impressive 14-3 major decision triumph, which was the only bonus point scored throughout the entire match and would later prove the match's deciding factor.
Chris Gugliotti then put the Spartans ahead 9-7 as he collected his 18th win of the 2010-11 campaign. The Spartans sophomore bested Devan Jones 8-3 to give a trio of points to York's side of the scoreboard.
Following York's two straight, Shippensburg came back and took the next two matches, the 157- and 165-pound bouts, as they recaptured the lead at 12-7. Notably, Albert Gleichauf's effort at 157 pounds was eventually instrumental in the Spartan victory. Despite dropping the match 7-4, Gleichauf fought off a second period pinfall that would have given Shippensburg a trio of bonus points.
Junior captain Matt Heisey got the Green and White back in the win column as he edged out a slim 5-4 triumph at 174 pounds. Heisey, who was down 4-3 late in the match, had a terrific third period reversal to capture the win and bring the Spartans to within two at 12-10.
Fellow junior captain Alex Martocello put the Spartans in front for good when he snagged his 22nd victory of the season. The 184-pounder fought off a Tyler Zittle near fall and then roared back to secure the 13-7 win. Martocello's decision put York up 13-12 with only two bouts remaining.
George Saliba, York's third junior captain, gave the Green and White some breathing room with his win at 197. Saliba, who had not seen mat action for some time, came away with a 6-3 triumph over Keith Dahlheimer as his bout proved to be just enough to get the Spartans the victory.
Despite his defeat at 285 pounds, senior James Laughlin did a tremendous job to ensure the team win. Down late in the match, an unselfish Laughlin did not take any unnecessary chances that could have cost York the overall triumph if he had given up bonus points. The Spartan senior wrestled out the bout wisely, helping the Green and White to capture the tight one-point triumph.
Against Thaddeus Stevens, the Spartans would only wrestle six matches, winning the other four by forfeit.
Freshman Sergo Grigorian picked up a solid 18-2 technical fall victory at 133 pounds to take his ninth win of the season.
Albright followed up Grigorian's showing with a pinfall just 1:45 into his 141-pound bout as he improves to an incredible 27-1 on the season.
Heisey returned to the mat at 174 pounds as he secured a 13-2 major decision over Jihad Johnson to put York ahead 33-6.
Martocello's first period pinfall at 184 improves his record to 23-2 on the season while Kyle Minogue captured a pinfall of his own, winning the 197-pound match 2:32 into the opening frame.
York's two victories give them 19 on the year and bring them just two shy of the program-record 21-win season back in 2002-03. That year, the Spartans went an impressive 21-2 and fell only to #4 College of New Jersey and #16 Lycoming.
The Green and White, winners of eight of their last nine matches including six straight victories, turn their collective focus to Saturday, February 5. York is slated to travel to New York, N.Y. where they will take on host Hunter and #22 Elizabethtown beginning at 1:00 pm.
