WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College wrestling team finished day one of the 23rd Annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Wilkes-Barre, PA with two wins in three matches. The Spartans, who are the top seeded team in the tournament, defeated Heidelberg 20-15 in the opening round and then outlasted Trine University 25-22 in the round two. Williams ended the Spartans run in the championship bracket with a 28-10 victory over the Green and White.
The Spartans are now 13-4-1 overall with the day's result. The Spartans are also ranked 12th in the nation according to the most recent NWCA poll.
In the Heidelberg match, the Spartans got off to a good start as senior Jerrid Hartman earned a 5-0 win over Devin Mazik at 125 pounds, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Heidelberg tied the match with a win at 133 pounds. Spartan sophomore standout Chris Albright notched a 2-0 win at 141 pounds as York took a 6-3 lead. Sophomore Chris Gugliotti pushed the Spartan advantage to 10-3 with an 18-5 major decision over Andrew Johnson at 149 pounds.
The Berg registered wins in the next three weight classes to seize a temporary 12-10 lead. Junior Alex Martocello stopped the Heidelberg run with a 12-4 major decision win over Pat Rigsby at 184 pounds as the Spartans recaptured the lead. Heidelberg's Andy Lovins put his squad back on top with a 4-3 win at 197 pounds as the match hung in the balance for the last bout. York's James Laughlin sealed the win with a 6-2 win over Jerry Knap in the heavyweight bout as the Spartans snapped their two-match losing skid.
Against Trine, the Thunder forfeited the first two weight classes giving the Spartans a 12-0 lead. Albright posted a 12-3 major decision over Forrest Romer in the 141 pound bout. Gugliotti increased the Spartan lead to 22-0 with a pinfall win at 149 pounds. The Thunder then won three straight matches including a major decision at 157 and a pinfall win at 174, cutting the York lead to 22-13. Martocello again stopped the opponent's momentum as he recorded a 10-5 win over Jason Albert at 184 pounds. Trine tightened the match late with a pair of wins at 197 and heavyweight to close out the match.
Against Williams, the Spartans fell behind early as the Ephs won the first two weight classes to take a 6-0 lead. Albright completed a perfect day with a 7-2 win at 141 pounds as he defeated Ces Antista to get the Spartans on the board. Williams took control of the match with wins in the next three weight classes, pushing their lead to 16-3. Junior Matt Heisey recorded a major decision win at 174 pounds and Martocello earned his third win of the day with a 1-0 win at 184 pounds. Those two wins drew the Spartans to within 16-10 but Williams won the final two weight classes, one by fall and one by forfeit.
The Spartans now fall to the consolation bracket where they will face the winner of the Thiel/John Carroll match up on Saturday morning at 9:00 am in Williamsport.
