YORK, Pa. – The York College wrestling squad has received outstanding news over the past several weeks as they continue their return to national prominence. The Spartans have posted a terrific season thus far and have been rewarded with a jump in the national team rankings as well as recording a pair of excellent individual recognitions.
York has steadily climbed the national rankings and are now listed #15 among NCAA Division III institutions according to the NWCA. The Green and White started the season unranked before making their initial appearance in the top-30 this year at #18 back on December 8.
In mid-December, 141-pound standout Chris Albright was selected as the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler-of-the-Week after his outstanding performance during York's quad meet against Wilkes, Muhlenberg, and Delaware Valley. Albright picked up the honor after posting wins against Wilkes' Ryan Wilson (pinfall at 4:27) and Delaware Valley's Matt Ulrich (13-0 major decision). The talented sophomore now stands at an impressive 14-1 for the season and has won each of his 14 matches by either pinfall or major decision.
At 197-pounds, junior George Saliba continues his tremendous 2010-2011 campaign as he moves up to #8 in the country. According to the NWCA's December 22 rankings, Saliba ranks eighth among all of Division III's 197-pound wrestlers. For the season, the junior captain sports a 14-1 mark and has picked up tournament championships at the season-opening Monarch Invitational and York's own New Standard Invitational.
The Spartans return to action this Friday, January 7, when they travel to the Virginia Duals. York begins the two-day tournament against Apprentice on Friday at 11:00 am.
