York Wrestlers Finish Third as Three Spartans Earn Individual Crowns

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The York College wrestling squad opened up the 2010-11 season with a strong third place showing at the King's College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Saturday. Chris Albright (141), Matt Heisey (165), and George Saliba (197) earned individual titles as the Spartans finished with 110.5 points, a mere 1.5 points away from second-place Roger Williams University.

Wilkes won the event with a team score of 155.

Albright, who was the second seed at 141, began his day with a pin fall win over James Straight of Kings College. Albright put Straight on his back in just 1:57. He advanced to the semifinals with a decisive 13-1 win over Wilkes Jared Brownmiller. Albright then blanked Roger Williams' Connor Hayes 8-0 to reach the championship match. Albright was dominant in the match as he drilled fourth seeded Michael Gregg of Oneonta State 14-6 to win his first individual title as a Spartan.

Heisey entered the tournament as the top seed at 165. He began his day with a 5-3 win over Gettysburg's Dan Grabfelder. He then put Oneonta's Chris Gevinski on his back in a mere 55 seconds to advance to the semifinals. Heisey recorded his second consecutive pin with a victory in 2:53 over RIT's Ben Johnstone. Heisey then finished off his championship with an 11-9 win over third-seeded Michael Monson of Roger Williams.

Saliba entered the 197-pound draw as the second seed and didn't disappoint. He started the day with an 8-2 win over RIT's Tim Thurmau. Saliba needed to work extra time to advance to the semifinals as he edged Wilkes' David Oberrender 4-2 in the quarterfinals. Saliba had to work extra time to advance to the championship bout as he defeated Daniel Brown 4-2, again in sudden victory. Saliba clinched the individual championship with a 3-1 win over Oneonta's Derek Wignall.

Senior Jerrid Hartman secured a third place finish at 125 pounds. He began the day as the fourth seeded wrestler and opened with a 6-3 win over Anthony Peterson from Wilkes. Hartman then moved into the semifinals with a pin fall victory at 5:47 over Oneonta's David Bailen. Hartman was kicked down to the consolation bracket when the fell to top-seeded Scott Mantua of Wilkes. Hartman bounced back with a quick pin fall win over Richard Dorsey of Kings, putting him on is back in just 1:22. Hartman then took third as he defeated teammate Taylor Boyd 6-4 in the consolation championship. Boyd was seeded second at 125. He opened up his tournament with a 7-6 win over Dorsey before falling into the consolation bracket with a loss to eventual class champion Myzar Mendoza of Wilkes 9-3. Boyd battled back with a 3-2 win over teammate Sergo Grigorian as Boyd advanced to face Hartman. Grigorian ended his day with a fifth place finish as he defeated Dorsey in fifth-place match.

The Spartans also received fifth place a fifth place finish from Chuck Glatz at 133 pounds and sixth place finishes from Jonny Volz at 141 pounds, Chris Gugliotti at 149 pounds, and James Laughlin at 285 pounds.

The Spartans return to action next Saturday when they travel to the Hershey Duals. The Green and White will face Shippensburg, Waynesburg and Johns Hopkins. The Spartans then make their 2010-11 home debut the following Saturday when they host a quad with Waynesburg, Messiah and Lake Erie College.
