The York College Athletic Hall of Fame grew by three on Saturday during the annual induction ceremony at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Coach and Professor Pat Massa, wrestler Gary Papa, and field hockey standout Jaclyn (Russell) Showers became the newest members of the Hall of Fame.
On the heels of their fantastic 2010-2011 campaign, the York College wrestling team received outstanding news this week as senior James Laughlin was selected as a National Wrestling Coaches Association 2010-2011 Division III Scholar All-American while the Spartan team was listed 12th with a GPA of 3.337.
Junior York College wrestler Alex Martocello has been named this week’s Spartan-Athlete-of-the-Week after finishing fourth at the 2011 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships. This is the second time Martocello has been honored with the accolade during the year.
The York College wrestling team adds two more All-Americans to their ledger as 184-pound Alex Martocello and 141-pound Chris Albright finished the NCAA National Wrestling Championships today in LaCrosse, Wis. Martocello, a junior captain for the Spartans, captured fourth overall while sophomore Albright snagged fifth.
Chris Albright and Alex Martocello became York College’s 21st and 22nd All-American wrestlers Friday at the NCAA Division III National Championships in LaCrosse, Wis. They both are currently competing at the national tournament after capturing their weight class titles at the Metropolitan Conference Championships back on February 27.
Alex Martocello and Chris Albright put together championship performances as the York College wrestling team snagged third at the 2011 Metropolitan Conference Championships. For his tremendous showing, Martocello was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.
The York College wrestling squad competes at the 2011 Metropolitan Conference Tournament on Sunday, February 26. The Spartans have had a fantastic year, totaling a program-tying 21 team wins and posting a trio of wrestlers in the top-10 of their respective weight classes.
The York College wrestling team closed out a banner 2010-11 regular season with a 28-9 victory at McDaniel on Friday night in Westminster, MD. The Spartans, who are ranked 15th in the nation, improve to 21-5-1 overall. The 21 wins tie a school record for victories in a season. McDaniel falls to 6-12 for the campaign.
The #15 York College wrestling squad picked up a 28-13 triumph over Millersville on Tuesday evening in Millersville, Pa. The Spartans improve their season mark to 20-5-1 as they are now just one win shy of their program record of 21 victories.
The #15 York College wrestling squad suffered a 31-9 defeat Friday evening at Division II Kutztown. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 19-5-1 on the season while the Golden Bears, who were previously ranked this season, improve to 9-10.
Sophomore wrestler Chris Albright has been selected as the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week after posting two solid victories for the Green and White last Saturday against Shippensburg and Thaddeus Stevens. This marks the third time this season that Albright has been chosen for the honor.
The #17 York College wrestling squad picked up two more victories today as they bested visiting Shippensburg and Thaddeus Stevens in the Spartans' final home meet of the 2010-2011 season. The Green and White, who improved their season mark to 19-4-1 topped Division II Shippensburg 16-15 and then rolled to a 51-6 triumph over Thaddeus Stevens.
The #12 York wrestling team posted an impressive 38-3 triumph at King’s on Friday evening, improving their season mark to 17-4-1. The Spartans’ 17 victories this season is their highest total since recording 20 wins during the 2005-2006 campaign.
The #12 York College wrestling squad posted an outstanding 3-0 day and finished fifth at the 23rd Annual Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. Overall, the Spartans went 5-1 during the tournament to improve to 16-4-1 on the season. Standouts Chris Albright and Alex Martocello each went 6-0 during the weekend to improve to 23-1 and 19-2, respectively.
The York College wrestling team finished day one of the 23rd Annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Wilkes-Barre, PA with two wins in three matches. The Spartans, who are the top seeded team in the tournament, defeated Heidelberg 20-15 in the opening round and then outlasted Trine University 25-22 in the round two. Williams ended the Spartans run in the championship bracket with a 28-10 victory over the Green and White.
A day which began with so much promise, as the York College wrestling squad jumped up four spots to #12 in the latest NWCA poll, quickly turned sour Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans dropped a pair of matches at Elizabethtown. The Green and White fall to 11-3-1 on the season as they lost to #15 the College of New Jersey by a 22-21 margin before running into a buzzsaw in #11 Centenary and dropping a 30-6 result.
For a second time this season, York College wrestler Chris Albright has been selected as the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week. Albright secures the honor after leading York to the American College Division title and being named the division’s Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Virginia Duals.
In what continues to the be an astounding season, the #16 York College wrestling squad picked up the American College division championship at the 2011 Virginia Duals while #10 Chris Albright, who won each of his three matches including a pair of pinfalls, was named the division’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
The York College wrestling squad picked up their ninth team victory of the 2010-2011 campaign on Friday, besting the Apprentice School 30-16 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Spartans, who are currently ranked #16 according to the latest NWCA poll, improve their season mark to 9-1-1 and, in the tournament-style format, move on to face Nassau Community College Saturday afternoon.
The York College wrestling squad has received outstanding news over the past several weeks as they continue their return to national prominence. The Spartans have posted a terrific season thus far and have been rewarded with a jump in the national team rankings as well as recording a pair of excellent individual recognitions.
The #18 York College wrestling team continued to roll Saturday, as the Spartans picked up a trio of victories at the Muhlenberg Quad. The Green and White topped #14 Wilkes 19-18, host Muhlenberg 33-15, and traditional power Delaware Valley 26-9 to improve to an outstanding 8-1-1 mark on the season. The Spartans have now won six-straight dual meets as their eight team triumphs have already equaled their win total from last year.
The York College wrestling squad picked up a commanding 34-10 triumph at Gettysburg College Wednesday night as they continue their rejuvenated 2010-2011 campaign. The Green and White won eight of the ten matches en route to improving their dual meet record to a solid 5-1-1.
Following his New Standard Corporation Invitational championship, York College wrestler Chris Albright has been selected as the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week. Albright 141-pound championship at the New Standard is his second of the season as he also won the Monarch Tournament to kick-off the campaign.
The York College wrestling squad put together an outstanding showing at the 2010 New Standard Corporation Invitational, a tournament featuring four of the top-15 teams in the country, on Saturday at York’s Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Chris Albright and George Saliba each took home individual titles for the Spartans as York finished third out of eight squads, including besting #15 Brockport St., with 77.5 points.
The York College wrestling squad will host the 2nd Annual New Standard Corporation Invitational Saturday, Dec. 4, at 9:30 a.m. The New Standard Corporation Invitational, one of the top tournaments in Division III wrestling, sports four of the nation’s top-15 teams as well as 18 individual wrestlers ranked within the top-10 of their respective weight class.
The York College wrestling squad put on a terrific performance Saturday, posting a 2-0-1 mark, as they hosted their first dual meets of the 2010-2011 campaign. The Spartans topped Lake Erie (23-15) and Messiah (18-15), and tied #30 Waynesburg (18-18) to improve to a strong 4-1-1 on the season.
York College junior wrestler George Saliba has been chosen as the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for his 3-0 performance at the Hershey Duals on Saturday. With the trio of victories, the 1987-pounder improves his flawless season mark to 7-0.
The York College wrestling squad traveled to Hershey Pa. on Saturday afternoon for The Hershey Duals. The Spartans picked up two wins against Johns Hopkins 21-15 and Shippensburg 23-19, but fell to Waynesburg by a slim 18-16 margin. The Green and White improve their early season dual-meet record to 2-1.
The York College wrestling squad opened up the 2010-11 season with a strong third place showing at the King's College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Saturday. Chris Albright (141), Matt Heisey (165), and George Saliba (197) earned individual titles as the Spartans finished with 110.5 points, a mere 1.5 points away from second-place Roger Williams University.
