Spartans Go 2-2 at John Reese Duals

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The York College wrestling squad went 2-2 at Saturday’s Fifth Annual John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Spartans defeated Mount St. Joseph 26-15 and Scranton 44-3 before falling to New York University 30-8 and Ithaca 22-13. The Spartans are now 2-5 for the dual meet season.

The day began well for York with their victory over Mount St. Joseph. The Spartans took an early 9-0 lead courtesy of an Aaron Repman (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) win at 125 and an Alex Paladino (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) forfeit win at 133. The Lions captured the next three weight classes, all via major decision to forge a 12-9 lead. Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) tied the match at 12 with a 3-2 win at 165 pounds. After a Mount St. Joseph win at 174, Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) rolled to an 18-0 tech fall win to give York a 17-15 lead. George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) earned a forfeit win at 197 and Tom Fitzpatrick (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) recorded a 6-3 at heavyweight to close out the match.

The Spartans rolled in the match against Scranton as they lost just one weight class. Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Shaun Wagner (Dover, Pa./Northeastern) began the match with a pair of tech fall wins at 125 and 133. Taylor Ulm (Great Meadows, N.J./Hakettstown) then won by fall to take a 16-0 lead. The Spartans also got a pin fall victory at 165 by Heisey and at 197 by John Starcevich (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) while Zachary Downing (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded a major decision win at 174.

In the loss to NYU, the Violets jumped on the Spartans early as they captured victories in the first four weight classes. York got on the board with an Alan Dyer (Laurel Springs, N.J./Camden Catholic) win at 157 pounds. NYU pushed the lead to 24-2 with wins at 165 and 174. Martocello and Saliba posted back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 to cut the Violet lead to 24-8. The Violets won the heavyweight via pin to conclude the match.

In the final match of the day, the Spartans again found themselves down early as Ithaca won the first five weight classes to take a 19-0 lead. York won the next four weight classes as Heisey and Paul Richards (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) recorded wins at 165 and 174 followed by a Martocello major decision win at 184, drawing the Spartans to 19-10. Saliba continued his solid day with a 3-2 win at 197 pounds as York was within a pin of a victory at 19-13. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Bombers won the heavyweight battle to earn the win.

York travels to Waynesburg for a quad meet on Saturday, November 21. The Spartans face Messiah at 12:00 pm followed by a match with Baldwin-Wallace at 2:00 pm. The Green and White completes their day at 4 pm with a match against Waynesburg.
