YORK, PA - For the second consecutive week, a York College wrestler has been selected as the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week. Sophomore 184-pound Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) garners the honor after he pushed his stellar 2009-10 mark to 18-5 by posting a 5-1 mark since January 11.
Martocello highlighted his fantastic week by going 4-0 at the Budd Whitehill Duals on Friday and Saturday in Williamsport, Pa. The second-year Spartan opened the Duals with a with an 8-1 decision over Ithaca's Keith Dickey.
Against Ohio Northern, Martocello captured a tight 4-3 triumph, besting Matthew Alexander by the slighest of margins.
Day two of the Budd Whitehill Duals saw Martocello add two more victories to his already impressive slate. York opened Saturday's portion of the Duals against Thiel College, which the Spartans topped 26-10. Martocello picked up his third win of the event with an 11-3 major decision over Patrick Morris.
The 184-pounder finished the Green and White's four-match set with yet another individual victory helping the Spartans defeat #29 Olivet 22-21. Martocello nabbed a 13-8 decision against Josh Crawford, running his season record to 18-5.
Earlier in the week, Martocello went 1-1 in two matches at the College of New Jersey. He secured a major decision triumph with a 13-5 win against Centenary's JJ Mitchell in York's latter match at TCNJ. Martocello's lone loss of the week came to TCNJ's Mike Denver, who is currently ranked #5 at 184 pounds in Division III.
Martocello leads the Spartans as they return home on Saturday, January 23, for their final home meet of the 2009-10 campaign. The Green and White host Kings College in a 12:00 p.m. tilt.
