COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The York College wrestling team visited
Ursinus College Saturday for the annual North/South Duals as the
Spartans went 1-3 over their four matches. The Green and White
defeated Johns Hopkins while falling to #19 Wesleyan, Ursinus, and
#13 Cortland. Despite the disappointing team results, several
individual Spartans put on quality performances.
York’s 125-pound pair of Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion,
Pa./Red Lion) and Aaron Repman (Hanover, Pa./South
Western) went a combined 4-0 on the afternoon.
Hartman’s 6-4 victory over Wesleyan’s Dan Bloom, who
ranks eighth in the country in his weight class, highlighted the
125-pound showings.
Sophomore Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar
Crest) tallied a flawless day of his own as he took all
three of his 165-pound matches, including a strong 8-6 win over
Wesleyan’s Josh Berkovich.
Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place)
continued his outstanding sophomore campaign by adding three more
triumphs to his 2009-10 record, posting a 3-1 mark in the 184-pound
class at the North/South Duals.
As a team, the Green and White fell to Wesleyan by a 34-6 count as
Hartman and Heisey provided the lone victories against the
Cardinals.
The Spartans defeated Johns Hopkins, 24-11, with seven Spartans
capturing victories over the Blue Jays. Repman led off the match
with a win before Chris Gugliotti (Swoyersville,
Pa./Pittston Area) nabbed three points in the 141-pound
division. After back-to-back losses, the Green and White rattled
off five straight victories to close out the match and secure the
win. Martocello and 285-pound Shane Cooley (Wrightsville,
Pa./Eastern York) highlighted the run with a tech fall and
major decision, respectively.
Ursinus took a 24-16 result, besting the Spartans by a mere eight
points. Repman started the match as he put the York squad in front
with a tech fall. Heisey would halt a string of Bear wins as the
165-pounder turned in a 10-1 major decision, while Martocello
picked up a tight 3-2 victory over Nate Murren. Thomas
Fitzpatrick (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) added another 10-1
major decision triumph in the heavyweight class.
Cortland handed the Spartans a tough 37-6 defeat. Hartman
registered a trio of points by posting a 4-1 win over the now 13-5
Jared Lemke at 125 pounds. Martocello topped Jared Myhrberg in
another tight decision, besting Cortland’s 184-pounder 6-5 in
double overtime.
The Green and White return to the mat this Tuesday, January 12, as
they travel to Trenton, N.J. The Spartans will take on Centenary
and the College of New Jersey at the TCNJ tri-meet beginning at
4:00 p.m.
