Spartans Open Campaign on a Pair of Fronts

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The York College wrestling program opened their season in two different locations on Saturday. The Spartans sent a group of wrestlers to the University of Maryland to compete against the 10th ranked Terrapins and Drexel University. The other group of Spartans competed at the Kings College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

In College Park, the Spartans suffered a 37-9 loss to Drexel to kick off the dual meet season. The Green and White were then shutout by the Terps as they rolled past the Spartans 57-0.

Against Drexel, the Dragons opened the match with victories in the first six weight classes before the Spartans got on the board with a forfeit victory at 174 pounds. After another Drexel win at 184 pounds, sophomore George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) notched a 7-4 decision at 197 pounds for the Spartans. Drexel closed out the win with a major decision win in the heavyweight bout.

Against Maryland, the nationally ranked Terps left little doubt about the outcome of the match. Maryland recorded eight pin fall victories, a tech fall win and one major decision to blank the Spartans.

At the Monarch Invitational, the Spartans finished sixth of 10 teams with 70.5 points. York had three wrestlers earn top three finishes as Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) was second at 125 pounds while Jeff Snair (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) was third at 125 pounds and John Starcevich (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) finished third at 197 pounds.

Hartman began his day with a pin fall win over Wilkes’ Taylor Stuart. He then posted a 7-3 win over Muhlenberg’s Tommy Gazza as he advanced to the semifinal round. Hartman earned his slot in the finals with a 5-4 win over fellow Spartan Snair. Hartman dropped an 8-6 decision to Wilkes Scott Mantua in the final to finish second. Snair earned his third place finish courtesy of an 8-7 win over Stuart in the consolation semifinals before he bested Oneonta’s Andrew Cabibbo, 6-5, to finish third.

Starcevich began his day with a 2-1 win over Gettysburg’s Anthony Perry before falling to Wilkes’ Zach Pizarro in the semifinals. Starcevich bounced back with a 3-1 win over Wilkes’ Chris Smith in the consolation semifinals. He then rolled to a 16-0 tech fall over USMA Jeff Ducote to finish third.

The Spartans open their 2009 home schedule on Wednesday evening as they host McDaniel College in a non-conference match. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start in Wolf Gymnasium.
