WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College wrestling team got back on track Saturday winning both of their matches in the final day of the Budd Whitehill Duals. The Spartans defeated Thiel 26-10 in the morning before knocking off #29 Olivet by a narrow 22-21 margin. With the two victories York improves their 2009-10 record to 8-15.
In the day’s opening match against Thiel, the Green and White took seven of the ten bouts garnering a pin and two major decisions. Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) picked up where he left off after a 2-0 performance on Friday. The 125-pounder tallied a pinfall 3:44 into his bout with Adam Householder. At 141 pounds, Chris Gugliotti (Swoyersville, Pa./Pittston Area) posted a 9-1 major decision before Zach Tolbert secured a 13-6 decision over Ben Mellring at 157. After a short blip at 165, the Spartans rattled off wins in the final four weight classes. Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) picked up the 15-10 174-pound victory followed by Alex Martocello’s (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) 11-3 triumph at 184. George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) nabbed the 197-pound class with a 10-3 win while Tom Fitzpatrick (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) finished off the run with a tight 2-1 victory at 285.
York kept that momentum through their second bout of the day, picking up a close 22-21 win over #29 Olivet. The Green and White were slated to battle Baldwin-Wallace but a schedule change pitted the Spartans against the Comets.
This time, Aaron Repman (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led the York squad into the match, nabbing the 125-pound class with a 17-3 major decision. Hartman, who bumped up one class for the match with Olivet, tallied his second pinfall of the day scoring this one 2:53 into the 133-pound bout. The Comets then went on a five-match run taking the 141- through 174-pound divisions. Martocello however, was able to stop the bleeding as he secured the win at 184. The standout sophomore tallied a much-needed 13-8 decision to get the Spartans back on track. Saliba followed at 197 with a 10-3 decision setting up heavyweight Shane Cooley (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) for late-match heroics. Cooley gave the Green and White the victory as he registered a dizzying 21-second pinfall.
Hartman and Martocello posted unblemished marks for the Duals as each wrestler recorded 4-0 slates. For the year, Hartman’s record now stands at an impressive 18-6 while Martocello has a sparkling 18-5 mark. Saliba went
The Spartans return home next Saturday for the first time since December 12 as they welcome Kings College to the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness for a 12:00 p.m. tilt.
