Hartman, Gugliotti, Martocello Shine; Spartans Falter at Budd Whitehill Duals
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College wrestling squad struggled Friday dropping both their matches at the annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The Spartans opened the day by falling to #4 Ithaca by a 36-12 count before dropping their latter match 29-14 to Ohio Northern. The pair of defeats leaves the Spartans’ record at 6-15 for the campaign.
There were bright spots however as Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), Chris Gugliotti (Swoyersville, Pa./Pittston Area), and Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) each added two victories to their individual records. The 125-pound Hartman began the day with a forfeit victory against Ithaca. Hartman then captured a huge 18-0 technical fall to open up York’s match with Ohio Northern, besting Louis Piszker at the 6:59 mark. The two wins up Hartman’s impressive 2009-10 record to 16-6.
Gugliotti, a Spartan freshman, nabbed his sixth and seventh wins of his rookie campaign at the Whitehill Duals. The 141-pounder picked up a tight 2-0 victory against Ithaca’s Junior Amazan before taking a 7-2 triumph by topping ONU’s Garrett Fellman.
Martocello’s 2-0 performance began with an 8-1 triumph over Ithaca’s Keith Dickey in their 184-pound bout. The exceptionally talented sophomore backed up that victory with another in York’s match with Ohio Northern. By the narrowest of margins, Martocello nabbed his 16th win of the year, as he now stands at 16-5, with a tough 4-3 victory over Matthew Alexander.
Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest), another talented sophomore, went 1-1 in the first day of the Duals. Ithaca’s Derek Brenon bested Heisey 8-2 in their 165-pound match but Heisey quickly rebounded as he garnered a 7-1 triumph against ONU’s William Painter.
The Green and White return to action tomorrow for the second day of the two-day event. Please visit www.ycpspartans.com for updated information.
