Three Spartans Earn Top Four Finishes at Metro Championships

TRENTON, NJ - Three York College wrestlers earned top four finishes at the 2010 Metropolitan Wrestling Championships hosted by the College of New Jersey in Trenton, N.J. on Sunday afternoon. Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) finished second at 184 pounds while Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) finished third at 125. Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) placed fourth at 165 pounds. As a team, the Spartans finished seventh of nine teams with 35.5 points.

Martocello captured York's top finish of the day, entering the tournament as the weight's second seed. The talented Spartan sophomore bested NYU's Sabino Galassi in the opening round courtesy of a 4-1 decision. Round 2, the semifinals, saw Martocello garner a 19-3 technical fall over JJ Mitchell from Centenary. In the championship bout, Martocello ran up against the College of New Jersey's Mike Denver, currently ranked fifth in the country at 184 pounds. Denver, who had bested Martcello during their previous two matches this season, managed to pin the Spartan 2:55 into the final.

Despite the disappointing result, Martocello posted a fantastic season for the Green and White. The sophomore posted an outstanding 21-7 mark this season as he gained invaluable experience this year.

Hartman's Metropolitan Championships began with a 1:56 pinfall over Ariel Guererro of Hunter College. In the semifinal round, Hartman suffered an 11-3 defeat at the hands of Wilkes' Scott Mantua, who would go on to secure the runner-up spot. The junior continued his day however, after topping Michael Tabasco from Kings by another fall, this time 4:30 into the bout. Hartman then secured third with a tight 3-1 victory as he defeated TCNJ's Dan Franke.

Hartman's junior campaign comes to a close as he finishes with a 21-6 record for the 2009-2010 season.

Heisey, the Metros fifth seed at 165, opened the tournament with a 6-4 upset defeat of fourth-seeded Michael Lussier of Elizabethtown College. The sophomore's next bout found him on the mat with the weight's top seed, Centenary's Matt Regan. Regan would best Heisey with a pinfall at the 5:27 mark. Pushed to the consolation bracket, Heisey would then register a 12-4 victory over NYU's Sean Connors. In the third-place bout, Heisey came up against Wilkes' Benjamin Marich. This match went the distance, but Heisey came out on the short end of a narrow 8-7 decision.

For the season, Heisey, yet another talented second-year Spartan, finishes the year with a 15-16 record.

The Metropolitan Championships brings to an end not only the Spartans' 2009-2010 campaign, but also the careers of seniors Thomas Fitzpatrick (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) and Josh Trainor (Manchester, Md./North Carroll). Over the previous four seasons, these two have helped the Green and White achieve a 49-45-1 record.
